    ABOUT THE BURSARY

    Bursary awards are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students studying at Milpark tertiary institutions. The bursary typically covers 50% of study fees, including registration fees; while students will be required to pick up the remaining costs.

    ELIGIBILITY

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:

    • South African citizen/ permanent resident,
    • 18 years or older,
    • Meet the minimum entry criteria for chosen qualification,
    • Academic excellence,
    • Proven financial need (is unable to pay the course fees and is not eligible for a student loan).

    ABOUT THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

    The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) are inviting students to apply for the Funza Lushaka Bursary for the 2022 academic year. There are 66 district-based bursaries available, for Western Cape-based Matriculants who intend on pursuing a formal teaching qualification, specifically the following:

    • BEd: Foundation Phase
    • BEd: Intermediate Phase
    • BEd: Senior Phase
    • BEd: Further Education and Training Phase

     

    The Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme was launched in the year 2007, in order to promote teaching in public schools for the youth of South African. The programme is run at 3 institutes in the Western Cape: Stellenbosch University, the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

    The full-cost bursary will provide cover for the following expenses: tuition fees, textbook allowance, notes and laboratory fees (where applicable), meals, accommodation, a monthly stipend for basic living expenses.

    MORE ABOUT THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY PROGRAMME – RENEWABILITY & SERVICE CONTRACT

    The Funza Lushaka Bursary will be awarded for 1 academic year at a time and may be renewed each year based on satisfactory academic performance. Bursary recipients must reapply for funding by the end of October for the following academic year.

    Once students have graduated, they will be required to teach at a school located in a rural area – the duration of the teaching position will be equal to the duration of bursary funding received.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FUNZA LUSHAKA BURSARY

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

    • You must be a South African citizen
    • You must be currently in Matric
    • You must reside within the Western Cape

    Bursaries will be awarded based on merit, and will be assessed by the WCED’s selection committee, based on the following criteria:

    • You must achieve a Bachelor’s degree admission on your Matric certificate
    • You must be accepted into an approved BEd degree, to specialise in at least 2 priority areas
    • You must achieve a minimum result of 60% for your Home Language and a minimum result of 50% for your First Additional Language in Matric
    • You must achieve a minimum result of 50% for your other 4 subjects in Matric
    • Students who intend on specialising in the Foundation Phase: you must pass Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy in Matric
    • Students who intend on specialising teaching technical subjects: you must pass Mathematics or Technical Mathematics and Physical Sciences or Technical Sciences in Matric

    Black Mountain Mining (BMM), owned by Exxaro Resources and Vedanta-Zinc International (VZI), is located in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The mine has been operating since 1980, but was acquired by Vedanta Resources from Anglo American in 2010.

    BMM is currently comprised of a processing plant and 2 underground shafts (Swartberg Shafts and Deeps Shafts). The Swartberg shaft produces lead, copper and silver (as a by-product), while the Deeps shaft produces lead, copper, zinc and silver (as a by-product)

    BMM employs approximately 1500 staff members at their current operations. They are one of the biggest private sector employers within the Northern Cape, and around 80% of their employees are originally from the Northern Cape.

    Postgraduate students will receive a maximum of R7 500 worth of funding

    Bursary awards will be credited to the bursars student account. The bursary may be used in conjunction with another bursary or award (if it has been declared on your application form)

    • You must be currently studying towards a BCom Accounting (Chartered Accounting)/ BCom General Accounting/ BCom Accounting Sciences qualification at Nelson Mandela University
    • You must be in your 2nd or 3rd year of full-time study in 2021
    • You must have achieved excellent academic results: a minimum average of 70% for 2020 studies for 1st year OR a minimum average of 65% for 2020 studies for 2nd year
    • You must have made a big contribution to society or others during 2020 – social commitment will be assessed based on evidence submitted by the student
    • Preference will be given to students in financial need (who form part of the “missing middle” i.e. with a household income of between R350 000 and R600 000 per annum – students who wish to study further but do not qualify for NSFAS)

    Postgraduate students:

    The Rotary Club of Newlands was established in South Africa in 1994 and is one of the largest clubs in their district. Their membership consists of individuals between the ages of 28 and 80, and the club obtains most of its funding via volunteer staff and the management of marshals across the Western Cape. The Rotatory Club of Newlands aims to find opportunities and ways to face many of the country’s social and economic issues, and they believe in the importance of working with the youth of various communities.

Their projects range from promoting peace to fighting disease, providing clean water and sanitation services, helping women and children, providing educational support, as well as growing communities’ economies. Rotary International has more than 35 000 clubs over the world, with individuals all working together to prevent many of the world’s issues.

    ABOUT THE ROTARY CLUB OF NEWLANDS BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED

    The Rotary Club of Newlands is inviting students to apply for a bursary opportunity, that covers ALL fields of study. Bursaries are awarded each year, for courses that are at least 2 years long, with funding starting from the 2nd year of study.

    The bursary program may be awarded for different courses and for different durations, as such, bursaries may be awarded for courses that are 2 years or longer but the funding will then start from the 2nd year.

    The Rotary Club of Newlands bursary is awarded based on 2 major criteria: financial need and academic merit.

    MORE ABOUT THE ROTARY CLUB OF NEWLANDS BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & RENEWABILITY

    The Bursary aims to cover the candidate’s registration and tuition fees, as well the costs for any books they may require, and is awarded per annum. Bursaries are generally awarded to cover 75% of the course fees, however students who perform exceptionally may receive funding up to 100% – this will be subjects to the availability of funds and at the discretion of the committee.

    Bursaries are awarded for 1 academic year at a time and are renewable each year based on satisfactory performance. Bursary recipients will be favoured, depending on the decision from the committee, the work ethic of the student, as well as the availability of funds.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROTARY CLUB OF NEWLANDS BURSARY

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

    • You must be a South African citizen (non-citizens will be considered under exceptional circumstances)
    • Preference will be given to students residing in the Western Cape province (students from other provinces may also apply, if they intend to stay in the Western Cape)
    • You must have excellent academic results and merit
    • You must be in financial need
    • Preference will be given to students completing their first degree/ basic/ skills qualification
    • You must be in your 2nd or later year of study (however, exceptional cases will be considered if you have strong Matric results, excellent references and work experience)
