Central Applications Office(CAO) Handbook 2023-2024 |  Finding out about your working personality

We are pleased to inform you about Central Applications Office(CAO) Handbook 2023

You can learn more about more than 730 distinct programs in this handbook. You must first consider what type of working personality you might possess before deciding which might result in a fulfilling profession for you.

Four animals—the Ant, Bee, Eagle, and Honeyguide—have been chosen to represent various working personalities. Most individuals will resemble one of these creatures. Because each personality type has equal importance to play in our society, we need people with a variety of working personalities. There is no superior working personality to another. The `Self-assessment quiz’ will help you to decide which type you might be.

Once you have a general idea of the working personality type you might be, you can respond to additional questions to see whether you are more flexible or organized. Knowing this should also aid you in making a professional decision.

CAO International Application 2023-2024 | Apply Online

Central Applications Office(CAO) 2023- International Applicant Guide

We are pleased to inform you about CAO International Application 2023- read full details below

    INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

An international applicant is a person who is not a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa. The higher education institutions of KwaZulu- Natal welcome applications from international applicants for their formal degree, diploma and certificate programmes. Some institutions also offer the opportunity of study in South Africa for one semester or one year. Durban University of Technology and the University of KwaZulu-Natal cannot accept international applicants into their access programmes.

    Where to send your application

If you are applying for short-term study apply directly to the institution.

If you are applying to either the Durban University of Technology, the University of Zululand, Mangosuthu University of Technology or to several institutions at the same time, apply through the CAO.

If you are applying to the University of KwaZulu-Natal, apply directly to the institution.

Applications to study Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal are considered ONLY by citizens of the following SADC countries: Botswana, Lesotho and Mauritius.

    Deadlines for applications

International applicants should apply as early as possible. You will need a letter of acceptance from the higher education institution before you can apply for your Study Permit. The permit application will take up to eight weeks to be processed. The University of KwaZulu-Natal will not consider international applications received after 31 October.

    Study Permits

Apply to the South African Embassy, High Commission, Consulate or Trade Office for a Study Permit once you have a letter from the institution offering you a place. Acceptance by an institution does not place any obligation on the South African government to issue or renew Study Permits.

The permit currently costs R425 and must be renewed annually. This price will rise from 1 April 2008. Registered refugees and asylum seekers and others with Residence permits allowing them to study do not require Study Permits.

    Costs

Institutions can advise on the fees charged to international students and the cost of living. All international students are required by the South African government to take out private healthcare insurance, which can normally be arranged through the institution you are attending. Make sure you are insured for the whole period of study. You will not get subsidised treatment in South African government hospitals.

If you are not sponsored by a South African organisation or citizen, you will have to deposit cash or a bank guarantee equivalent to the airfare ENTRY 2009 131 to your country of origin. International students do not normally qualify for financial assistance from South African institutions.

    Foreign qualifications

The following are considered to be equivalent to the South African entry requirements:

    GCE:

Five passes in GCE including two at `A` level:

    • `A` level passes must be A, B, C, D or E
    • `O` level passes must be A, B or C

Applicants from SADC countries who have five passes at the `O` level including the English Language may be considered for diploma study.

    HIGCSE/IGCSE:

Passes in five subjects, four of which must be at HIGCSE level:

    • HIGCSE passes must be 1, 2 or 3
    • IGCSE passes must be A, B or C

    Evaluation

Applicants who have foreign qualifications and wish to enter degree programmes are required to have passes in English Language and one other language, and must usually also have passed Maths. They should apply for a Foreign or Foreign Conditional Matric Exemption from the Matriculation Board. Institutions will usually assist with this, or you can consult the Matriculation Board directly. There is a charge, currently R260, for a certificate of exemption.

Recommended: CAO Handbook 2023 | PDF Download

    13. The Acknowledgement Letter will have all the details you have provided on your application. Applicants are fully responsible for checking their Acknowledgement Letters and informing the CAO of any errors, omissions or changes.

    14. If you do not inform us of errors, omissions, or changes within two weeks after we have sent you the Acknowledgement Letter, we shall accept that all the information in the Acknowledgement Letter is correct and as complete as you want it to be.

    15. If you have not received an Acknowledgement Letter within four weeks after you have applied, please enquire if the CAO has received your application (See page 3 of the 2019 Entry Handbook for contact details).

    16. We provide your information to institutions electronically. The institutions have full and final responsibility for selection and admission decisions, not the CAO.

    17. Selection decisions we receive from institutions we pass on to applicants as soon as we receive them from the institutions. The institutions may also contact the applicant directly.

    18. Institutions start making offers early in the year preceding the year of entry. It is in your best interest to submit your valid application as early as possible.

    19. You will receive an SMS, a letter (either by email, fax or post) to inform you of any offers that you have been made by an institution to which you have applied. Try your best to have an email address to which we can send offer letters as institutions often have a cut-off date for receiving from the applicant confirmation of the acceptance of an offer. If the offer is not accepted within the stipulated period the institution reserves the right to withdraw the offer.

    20. Offers to study may be withdrawn if:

    • You don’t – within the period stipulated by the institution – tell the institution you want to accept the offer or;

    • The conditions of the offer are not met; and/or

    • The institution discovers that you have provided false information in your application, e.g. you have not declared that you have previously studied at that or another institution.

    21. You will only receive either an email or SMS to inform you that you have been unsuccessful for any of the programme choices you applied for.

    22. Applicants should apply and pay on or before the published closing dates. Applications received after these dates will be considered as Late Applications and each institution has its own rules and procedures on how they deal with applications received after the closing date.

    23. If, after you have applied, you want to change your qualifications/ programme choices, you may complete a Change of Mind Request Form (COM) and choose different qualifications/programmes. These forms can be downloaded from our website or requested from our Call Centre.

    24. A COM will only be processed once we have received the COM fee (See page 171 of the 2019 Entry Handbook for fee structure). Alternatively, click on ‘Application Fee’ on the CAO Home Page.

    25. Any number of programme changes/additions (up to six programmes) on the same Change of Mind Request Form is considered as one for payment purposes.

    26. If you submit qualification/programme changes/additions on more than one Change of Mind Request Form and/or at different times, each Change of Mind Request Form submission will be regarded as a separate request and a fee must be paid for each submission, not for each qualification/programme change.

    27. Payment/s for multiple COM Request Form submissions will be allocated and processed strictly in the sequence that the COM Request Forms were received.

    28. Every attempt has been made to ensure that the information in this Handbook is accurate and up to date at the time of going to print. However, institutions continually update their programmes and entry requirements.

    29. During the course of the year, institutions may make available new programmes that were not finalised in time to be included in this Handbook – check our website www.cao.ac.za, Facebook page or contact our Call Centre on 0860 860 226 or 031 268 4444 for updates. At the time of going to print, only a few skills training and learnership programmes were included in this Handbook. Please check the website or contact us during the course of the year to find out about other available TVET skills training and learnership programmes or contact the TVET College directly.

    30. An entry in this Handbook does not oblige the institution to offer the programme as institutions continually assess their programmes and may decide to discontinue programmes during an application cycle. If an institution discontinues a programme that is published in this Handbook, the applicant may change such a programme at no cost to them.

    31. Specified entry requirements are guidelines used by institutions and each institution sets its own minimum entry requirements.

    32. Entry requirements published in the Handbook are MINIMUM requirements for your application to be considered; and in most cases, the number of applications for a qualification/programme far exceeds the number of places that an institution has available for the qualification/programme. Therefore, while you may meet the published minimum entry requirements, it does not guarantee acceptance.

    33. All payments to the CAO is done through EasyPay or by providing us with the information requested on the application form or pay online at www.cao.ac.za and click on ‘My Application’. The CAO does not take responsibility for payments in any other manner.

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1,000 staff.

WIT offers tuition and research programmes in various areas from Higher Certificate to Degree to PhD.

    Range and scope

    wit-front-entrance

WIT is the major provider of higher education in the South East region of Ireland and one of the largest IOT’s in Ireland. The Institute’s range and scope reflect the changing needs of the southeast as well as the country as a whole.

The range of academic programmes is exceptionally extensive, ranging from Higher Certificate right through to post-doctoral research and covering the Humanities, Health and Nursing, Science and Informatics, Engineering and Architecture, Business and Education.

    Lifelong Learning & Access

WIT has been a leader in the Irish higher education sector with regard to the provision of lifelong learning opportunities and access for disadvantaged groups. Many of WIT’s successful initiatives in this area have been copied by other colleges. Because of the needs of non-standard groups, WIT has responded by developing expertise in the areas of flexible accreditation, outreach and flexible delivery modes.

    Caring Environment

Providing a caring and supportive learning environment for its students is central to WIT’s ethos. The range and quality of student support services is excellent. Examples include the Student Life and Learning Centre and the Medical Centre which provide care, counselling, guidance and support for any student encountering personal, social or health difficulties. Good housing for students is also one of WIT’s priorities and the Institute currently owns and/or manages sufficient very high quality students apartments to meet the demand.

    Research and Innovation

There is a thriving research and postgraduate community in WIT. Many of the researchers have a high profile in both the national and EU community of academics. This is shown by the fact that WIT researchers have competed successfully against University researchers for prestigious national and EU research funding (e.g. PRTLI, SFI and EU Frameworks Programme FP4, FP5, FP6 and most recently FP7). Over the last 10 years Waterford Institute of Technology has successfully attracted over €70 million in research funding.

    International & Industry Links

WIT has formal academic exchange and research partnerships with over 40 universities worldwide. These range from the old established Universities such as Oxford, Trinity College Dublin and University College London to newer technological universities such as Budapest University of Technology and Nanjing University of Science and Technology. In addition WIT has very close relationships with industry & commerce, the professions and the public service for research, consultancy, student and graduate placements etc. A culture of entrepreneurship and innovation is fostered at all levels in the organisation. This can be illustrated by one year enterprise platform programme offered to graduates by the School of Business. Through its School of Humanities it plays a very significant role in the Social and cultural life of its region.
