With state-of-the-art technology and countless opportunities, it is a school that draws many students each year, both South African and International, though its population is not too large meaning students will have a personalised learning experience.

Overlooking the Indian Ocean, it is picturesque and a place many learn to call home over the course of their studies. However, alongside all these aesthetic perks, what is most important is their standard of education – it is in their very motto, the Latin of which is “Scientia Vires.” Translated to English, this means “knowledge is power.”

According to Mangosuthu University itself, its mission statement is as follows: “to offer technological, career-directed educational programmes focusing on innovative problem-solving research and engage with government/business/industry and communities as end-users.”

On top of this, the university also has some firm core beliefs that can be found in their vision statement. The gist of this is that they hold the following things in high regard and expect the same of their students and faculty: “to be a transforming, equitable, sustainable, and academically excellent University of Technology anchored in its communities.”

With an emphasis on community, prospective students should know that this is an institution that will support them every step of the way, arming them with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to succeed. Furthermore, their vision statement outlines the following points: one, to grow in academics; two, to be fair and inclusive to all, meaning there is a place at the table for everyone; three, to grow together harmoniously with the plethora of resources that are available; and lastly, to grow as a community and enrich these relationships to the fullest extent. Clearly, this is an institution that values academic growth, equal opportunities for all, and the continuous growth and cultivation of the community.

At Mangosuthu University, there are three main faculties:

SPU Applications: The what, where, when and how

Sol Plaatje University (SPU), located in Kimberly in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, is named after Solomon Tshekisho Plaatjie, a renowned South African intellectual journalist, linguist, politician, translator and writer who lived in Kimberley, South Africa between 1876 and 1932.

The university, which was established in 2014, wears its name with pride and boasts as the first university established in the Northern Cape province. With great power comes great responsibility, and the university aims to raise up young would-be Sol Plaatjies who are not only proudly South African but will bring lasting, positive change to South Africa.

SPU has researched the unique needs of not only the province but also South Africa and has structured its qualifications in such a way as to meet those needs with human intellect and knowledge.

What qualifications can you study at SPU?

The university offers diplomas, advanced diplomas, under- as well as postgraduate degrees in 4 main fields of study. These fields of study are:

    • Economic and management sciences offering qualifications such as Bachelor of Commerce, retail business- and public management as well as entrepreneurship.

When are applications to study at SPU for 2024 open?

Based on the 2025 academic year’s application dates, the 2025 academic year applications should provisionally be open between the beginning of August and the end of September 2025. In order to have the exact application dates, those who wish to apply to study through SPU in 2025 are urged to keep a close eye on SPU website towards the middle of the year.

Prospective students are cautioned not to wait too long to apply in order to ensure that there is enough time to sort out any problems that may arise from the application process.

How do you know if you can apply to study at SPU?

If you meet the basic requirements as detailed in this article and SPU’s website, you are in luck and will be able to apply to study at SPU. It should be quite simple to know whether you qualify since the requirements for the different qualifications are very straightforward, and it only requires you to match your final year subjects and final mark to the required APS.

    What are SPU’s requirements?

Not all the different fields of study within the university have the same requirements, just as the different types of qualifications also don’t have the same requirements. We advise you to look at the university’s prospectus for the 2025 academic year to know the requirements for your desired qualification. The prospectus also includes an Adm ission Points Score (APS) calculator that shows you what merits your various final school year results get and what APS your desired qualification has.

It would be wise to calculate your APS and compare this to the required APS of the qualification before you apply to have the best chance of a successful application. That being said, it is not guaranteed that your application will be successful simply if you meet the basic requirements.

    What documentation do you need?

To apply to study at SPU, if you are completing your matric year, you need the following documents:

    • Last year’s school results
    • SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) evaluation document based on the evaluation of your qualifications
