    0

    CAO Application Status

Central Application Office (CAO) solely exists to process applications for undergraduate courses centrally. It is also to help deal with the courses in a fair and efficient style. CAO holds the action to make decisions for admissions.

CAO is mainly used by Kwazulu-Natal, as well as some other institutions in South Africa.

There is a book available to help you prepare for the application process. It will assist you with what you need.

All questions you may have about CAO that aren’t answered in the CAO lecture or on the website can contact them by using the contact form.

How To Check CAO Application Status

You will begin by going onto the website www.cao.ac.za/; you will then need to click on the ‘my application’ button. This will lead you to a form that needs to be filled with your details; follow the instructions afterwards.

You need to make sure you have a valid email address, as this will be one of the main forms of communication between the CAO and yourself. You should receive all updates via this email address as well.

You need to choose the relevant qualification to make sure you meet all the minimum requirements for the said qualification.

You can make your payments via the website with your debit or credit card. Note that the transaction is secure, so that means so are your banking details. By completing the payment, you will then be transferred to the other points of the registration phase.

Applicants, no matter who, have the dates in common. This would be the time 5:15 PM, this means that you need to ensure all your information is loaded before the specific time of 5:15 PM.

If you miss the timing, you will be considered as a ‘CAO late applicant’. So the wise thing to do is complete everything ahead of time by a few weeks or days. VUT Applications: The what, where, when and how.

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has a vision of making quality learning available to South Africans and citizens from all over Africa. This quality learning is created and structured through research and expertise and is driven by innovation and, most importantly, technology. It is, after all, a university of technology. VUT makes its mission to equip young people to impact South Africa and the entire continent of Africa positively.

The university aims to perfect its vision and mission by offering internationally recognised degrees, diplomas, and courses in the management, sciences, and technology sectors.

VUT has three campuses: its main campus in Vanderbijl Park, Gauteng, South Africa, and its other two campuses in Secunda, Mpumalanga, and Upington, Northern Cape.

When are applications to study at VUT for 2025 open?

Applications for the 2025 academic year are provisionally open in August and close provisionally at the end of September. Prospective applicants are urged to visit the VUT website closer to the time to find out when exactly applications open, as these are just general indications based on the 2025 academic year.

The university also offers a late application option; however, waiting for the late applications to open is risky, as this portal will only be open if the student quota has not been met, meaning the university still has space for more students.

The university urges all applicants to apply sooner rather than later to ensure their application reaches the intended persons for processing.

Who can apply to study at VUT?

If you have the required merits, based on your matric certificate for the specific qualification you wish to enrol for, then you can most certainly apply. Read the next part of this article to know whether you meet the minimum requirements to be granted admission to study at VUT.

    What does VUT require?

It is important to note that each faculty member and sometimes the different qualifications within each faculty have different admission requirements. This is important because applying for a course for which you do not meet the minimum or admission requirements will result in your application being unsuccessful and a waste of money. Therefore, before applying for any qualification at VUT, compare their admission requirements with your matric results. You can find their minimum requirements for the 2025 academic year here. This is to give you an idea of the requirements for the 2025 academic year.

English is a requirement for all the offered qualifications, and in some cases, subjects such as mathematics, physical, and life sciences are also required.

Disclaimer: just because you meet the admission requirements does not guarantee admission, as the university has a certain student number quota that they must meet.

Do you qualify to study at VUT?

Once you have satisfied that you meet all the admission requirements for the qualification you desire to apply for at the university, you can apply for admission. Suppose you are unsure of whether you qualify to study at VUT. In that case, you can contact them either via email (here is a link to the various email addresses for your specific queries), or you could call their call centre on 0861 861 888, where a university representative will be sure to assist you.

Do you have the right documentation?

To apply to study at VUT, you need the following documents:

    • The application form is filled in online. You can access it here .
    • A certified copy of your ID or birth certificate (for South African applicants)
    • A certified copy of your passport (for international applicants)
    • A certified copy of your matric certificate or grade 11 results
    • Proof of payment of admission fee.

Is the documentation in the correct format?

Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, VUT does not allow hard-copy, physical applications; therefore, you would need to ensure that the documents you need in order to apply are in the correct format:

    • All documents are to be in black and white; no colour documents may be submitted
    • All documents are to be submitted in either one of the following formats: Image (JPEG), word document (.DOC), or Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF)
    • Applicants are to ensure that these documents are scanned and named individually and are not part of one document.

Now, you can apply to study at VUT, but how?

As mentioned above, the COVID-19 restrictions and regulations have caused the university to close physical applications, and VUT is now only allowing online applications. As the applications are currently closed, you can only access the online applications portal once applications have re-opened for the 2025 academic year. The link to this portal is here.

It is important to note that not all campuses have the same qualifications; therefore, you would need to be certain of which qualification you are applying for and whether the campus you want to study offers this qualification.

    How much does it cost?

The application fee is included in the application form and changes each year. For the 2025 year applications, the admission fee was R120.00. Applicants should keep a copy of their proof of payment.

It is important to note that this application fee is non-refundable. Whether your application was unsuccessful or you failed to register with your successful application.

    What courses does VUT offer?

VUT has four faculties aimed at producing entrepreneurial graduates with a drive for change and the knowledge of how to implement it.

    These faculties are:

    • Faculty of Applied and Computer Sciences – whose main focus is on information technology, health sciences and natural sciences such as chemistry. Visit the faculty website here for a detailed look at what specific courses it offers.

VUT offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, diplomas, advanced diplomas, courses and postgraduate courses through each of these faculties.

While most of these faculties are run from the Vanderbijl Park Campus, there are a number of courses that are also (or solely) administered from the Secunda or Upington campuses.

The Secunda campus offers courses and diplomas such as Safety Management (which so happens to be the only safety management course in South Africa) and various engineering diplomas. Whereas the Upington Campus offers courses and diplomas such as Internal Auditing, Tourism Marketing and various Management diplomas.

MSDS is a Defense program department facilitating a platform for enlisting interested individuals in the South African National Defense Force. If you enter the SANDF through MSDS, you must provide a voluntary service for 2 years. When it completes, the force will sign you with a contract for 5 years, permitted to be renewed for up to 65 years of age.

You can only enter the force if you have direct skills like diesel mechanics, IT specialists, or engineers.

Your first year of military skills development service encompasses the following training protocols.

    • Primary military and functional training
    • Special training related to crops
    • Partaking in practical exercises of the military force
    • Training exercises as combat preparation
    • Junior leader selection

Your second year of military skills development service contains the below-mentioned training.

    • Leader group corps training for junior leaders
    • Execution of Yong Officer Formative Training
    • Concentrating on the use and deployment of Military Skills Development System troops

During these two-year training and utilization, the Military Skills Development System members will obtain wages from the organization.

Requirements SANDF Applicants Should Follow to be Selected

To qualify as an SANDF candidate, you should fulfil the following criteria.

    • You should be a South African citizen between 18 to 22 years of age (the age relaxation for graduate students is up to 26 years).
    • You must continue with the National Senior Certificate or have completed it. Then, you can go through this page to learn how to acquire it.
    • Please don’t have any area restrictions, and having no criminal history is mandatory.
    • You should be fit according to the medical fitness obligations of the SANDF and ready to serve your country, along with continuing military and functional training.

All these requirements will be valid if you enter with direct SANDF recruitment and some trivial changes. Let’s discuss the additional requirements below.

    • The official age range for candidates is 18 to 26 years. Unfortunately, this age restriction isn’t viable for applicants with critical or professional skills.
    • If you are working somewhere else, you should be able to take special leaves for military activities.
    • Different corps might have additional requirements for candidates. For example, Air Force will require aviation-related expertise from applied candidates.

Candidates applying for the MSDS in SANDF, regardless of the branch of service, will need to undergo a selection process that incorporates an election board (interview), psychometric test, criminal record evaluation, and medical checkups.

Requirements to qualify for the Military Skills Development Program

For one to qualify for the Military Skills Development Program, the minimum requirements are as follows:

    • The candidate must be a South African Citizen without a dual citizenship
    • Should be aged between 18 and 22 years when they join and should not be more than 22 years if they are graduates
    • Only applicants who are single are accepted
    • Applicants should be currently in Grade 12 or completed Grade 12 or equivalent with subjects specific to a career selection.
    • The person should be willing to be deployed in any area or country for work purposes.
    • Their criminal record should be clean.
    • Should be physically and medically fit according to the requirements of the SANDF

Once one complies with all the prescribed requirements for appointment in the SANDF, they are recommended by a selection board.

However, specialized occupations may have additional requirements depending on their specific training demands. If an applicant meets the minimum requirements, they are further screened, and the chosen candidates will undergo another selection process which entails psychometric evaluation, formal interviews, medical evaluation, and criminal records check. If all is well, an employment offer is issued. Psychometric tests are tailor-made to suit the position being applied for. They are carried out to measure the mental aptitude of the candidate and their potential to develop in the position that was applied for.

Interviews will be held to ascertain if applicants have communication skills, self-confidence, and leadership potential. A thorough medical evaluation will be conducted by military medical practitioners in order to assess the applicants’ medical status and history. Applicants must have good medical results to qualify. Applicants must also go through criminal record checks done via fingerprint verification by the Criminal Record Bureau. Both successful and non-successful candidates will be informed of their results.

Requirements for joining the South African Air Force (SAAF)

The SAAF is an arm of the defence forces contributing to the welfare, security, and safety of its citizens. SAAF controls the South African skies and has also been structured towards regional peace-making, maritime patrol, operational control, and disaster relief. Some of the careers under SAAF are Aircrew (pilot and navigator), aviation and maintenance, engineering, and general maintenance.

The SAAF also provides combat-ready air capabilities for the SANDF in service of the country. The Air force Military Skills Development program is a two-year voluntary service system. Here, recruits sign up for a period of two years, during which they will receive military training. The requirements are the same as the MSDS program. However, serving in the air force requires psychological and physical attributes and the intellectual potential for developing the unique competencies needed in the air force.

More so, individuals who join the air force must have certain elementary attributes, while each mustering (or occupational class) include additional attribute requirements. For example, electricians must not be colour blind, as they must identify wiring in circuits by colour codes. Exclusion from one occupational class does not disqualify you from being considered for another.

Serving in the air force requires not only academic qualifications but also socially accepted behaviour. Society will be looking up to you; therefore, you have to always lead by example. Volunteers must pledge that they will uphold a strict Code of Conduct.

Requirements for joining the South African Navy (SAN)

The SA Navy’s mission is solely to render seaward military service, which is accomplished through the development, management, and maintenance of the ability to provide maritime operations, assistance and support operations, hydrographical services and supporting services. This requires highly trained and motivated personnel.

Those willing to join the SAN can do so through the MSDS. Careers that are featured in the SAN include protection force, engine room attendants, human resources, public relations, hospitality, fire-fighting, logistics, communication, physical training, maritime reaction squadron, SA Navy divers, and combat officers. It also features student engineers and student naval technical officers. However, to note is the fact that some opportunities here do require mathematics and physical science at level 4.

Training Requirements in the Naval College

To gain practical experience, junior officers receive their orientation training at the Naval College at Gordon’s Bay on the Cape. Accepted candidates undergo 12 weeks of a basic training course at the Naval College, Gordon’s Bay and Western Cape. Further selection procedures are done upon completion of the basic training, and successful candidates continue with Formative Training for Officers Part I.

As for officers with the required academic aptitude, they are sent to the Military Academy, where they study for their B.Mil. Degree. They may also attend the University of Stellenbosch, where they are trained as engineers. If one wishes to become a naval technical officer, he or she can study for diplomas at the universities of technology. Later on, in their careers, these officers then attend a series of courses at the Naval Staff College located in Muizenberg.

Here, they receive training in Management and Strategy, including other advanced subjects. This qualifies them for senior command and staff appointments. Non-Commissioned Officers: Basic training for all Permanent Force recruits takes place at SAS Saldanha. Technical training takes place at SAS Wingfield. Combat and other non-technical specialist training take place at SAS Simonsberg in Simonstown. Throughout their careers, Permanent Force members periodically return to these training units to do more advanced courses.

Requirements for joining the South African Military Health Services (SAMHS)

The SAMHS’ mission is ‘to support the SANDF by providing quality health services for the full range of armed forces deployments and to sustain the health members and armed forces and their families, and others eligible for SAMHS.’ It is comprised of four specialized units. These include the Institute of Aviation Medicine, the Institute of Maritime Medicine, the Military Veterinary Institute, and the Military Psychological Institute. These provide comprehensive medical care for the armed forces and those who depend on them. For one to join SAMHS, they also are recruited via the MSDS.
