How To Register With Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator

Youth unemployment is one of the major causes of hardship and poverty in the world. While some youths are unemployed because they do not have the necessary qualifications, others who have them are unemployed because they do not have access to job opportunities. They are unaware of the periods when companies have vacancies and so only apply when the portal is closed, and they end up stranded.

Other youths keep moving from one temporary job to another because they find it almost impossible to be gainfully employed at permanent jobs. This is a major cause for concern because unemployed youth are often unproductive to society and may engage in criminal activities to feed themselves. However, individuals, governments, religious bodies, and other organizations like Harambee are bridging the gap between job opportunities and youths who are willing to work.

This article discusses Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, how to register, and the available job opportunities for youths.

What you need to know about South Africa’s E-visa

    0

    What is an E-visa?

An E-visa is known in full as an electronic visa. It cancels out the need for individuals to visit physical consulates and embassies to apply for a visa to a country. They can apply online and wait for the results of their application. The coronavirus pandemic made governments around the world realize how important E-visas are. Applicants do not have to come into contact with other people, which helps to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The South African E-visa is not yet fully functional. However, the South African government is looking forward to an improvement in the country because of the E-visa.

The SA government is positive that the E-visa will attract more tourists. Tourism is one of the biggest contributors to South Africa’s economy. In 2018, 16.44 million tourists visited the country, making it the second most visited country in Africa After Morocco. The tourism industry grew at a 1.21% rate annually from 2000 to 2019.

The tourism and travel industry contributed 8.6%, or R425.8 billion, to South Africa’s GDP. As of 2018, it was also responsible for 1.5 million jobs in the country. However, the coronavirus pandemic dealt a blow to the tourism industry in 2020. The sector only accounted for 3.7% of South Africa’s annual GDP, which is the worst the country has seen in decades. Little wonder that the government is seeking ways to revive the industry and increase its GDP.

This article discusses South Africa’s E-visa requirements, eligible countries, and the application process.

However, there has been improvement, and the government added a few more countries to the list in this trial phase. If your application is approved, you will receive your grant in one of two ways:

Cash: You can receive your grant via cash at pay points at retailers, the post office, and SASSA officers on dedicated SASSA payment days. You can also receive it in cash at an institution, like at an old-age home.

Bank Transfer: SASSA can also deposit the money into your bank account or SASSA card on dedicated SASSA payment days.

How Long Will SASSA Pay The Grant After I’m Approved?

Just because your SASSA grant is approved, this doesn’t mean you will receive the grant indefinitely. If you are a recipient of the child support or child care dependency grant, you will no longer receive the grant once the child turns 19.

However, with other grants, you can receive them until you die or you no longer meet the eligibility criteria.

SASSA may also review your grant, which could lead to your being stopped from receiving it. If they decide to assess your grant status, you will receive three months’ notice to either provide proof of income or proof that you are still alive. If you receive your money through a bank or institution, you will be required to visit a SASSA office to complete a proof of life certificate for yourself or the child for whom you receive the grant once a year.

Furthermore, your grant may be suspended if:

    • You don’t comply with the grant review process.
    • SASSA determines the grant was incorrectly or improperly awarded.
    • The grant recipient’s circumstances change.
    • You were found to provide fraudulent or misleading information in your application.
    • The review outcome determines you are no longer eligible to receive a grant.

Am I Eligible for a Child Support Grant?

Raising a child in South Africa is costly, which is why the government has introduced a Child Support Grant. The grant is not meant to replace the income from a job but rather to supplement income shortfalls so parents and guardians can take adequate care of the child. However, many parents and legal guardians aren’t aware if they qualify for the grant. To qualify for a child support grant, you must:

    • Be the primary caregiver of the child (a parent, legal guardian, child-headed household where the child heading the household is over 16 years old, or grandparent)

You will also need to provide proof of child maintenance (if you receive it), proof of income and proof of custody (if you are divorced).

When you are at the SASSA office, you must complete the application form before the official. After handing over the application form, you will be given a receipt. Keep this receipt as proof that you’ve applied.

How to Extend Your Asylum Permit Online

    0

UNHCR defines an asylum seeker as a person whose request for temporary residence is yet to be processed. Such an individual is taking refuge in the country where he or she is seeking asylum for vicarious reasons. Some may have fled political crises, religious intolerance, abuse, or any other circumstance that posed a threat to their safety and wellbeing.

There were about 4.2 million asylum seekers globally by the end of 2019. Out of this number, South Africa hosts more than 153,000 asylum seekers in 2022. The Ministry of Home Affairs in South Africa recently made a big announcement in favour of asylum seekers. It will shake up the asylum system and grant asylum seekers the liberty to extend their permits online.

The Department of Home Affairs in South Africa is in partnership with UNHCR through an agreement to start a project to get rid of the accumulation of uncompleted work regarding decisions related to asylum seekers. This partnership aims to bring effective change to the refugee management system in South Africa by the year 2025.

The Department of Home Affairs started the online extension program on the 21st of April 2022. Refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa who qualify are supposed to renew their visas and status online by the 30th of June 2022.

This article will discuss everything you need to know about this new development and how to proceed.

What this means for asylum seekers

    • It will speed up the time it takes to process asylum seekers’ documents within South Africa. Over the last decade, asylum seekers have complained about the length of time it takes to extend their permits. This project will eradicate the backlog and promote swiftness.
    • The policy will prevent the spread of COVID-19 since it permits asylum seekers to apply for an extension from wherever they are as long as they can send an email. It is also a ray of light to people with disabilities because it will see their visa extension application process.
    • Asylum seekers who will officially gain recognition as refugees will have access to their full privileges and rights. It will increase freedom, give them a sense of belonging, and improve their self-esteem.
    • Asylum seekers will also be allowed to contribute to the growth and development of South Africa through their work in various sectors. The Asylum Decisions Backlog Elimination Project will enable asylum seekers to improve their craft and bring sustainable development to their communities. While some may work as employees, others may employ community members and reduce the unemployment rate. Consequently, it will reduce the rate of crime in South Africa. An increase in employed persons equals a reduction in community crime rates.
    • Asylum seekers will have access to national services on the same level as South African nationals. They will be equally important within the country, and the government will always seriously consider their worries and ideas.
    • The Asylum Decisions Backlog Elimination Project will promote democracy, make the refugee system more efficient, and reduce human rights violations. Furthermore, implementing this project will enable South Africans and asylum seekers alike to trust the government.
    • The project will bridge the gap between asylum seekers and members of South African communities. It will reduce inequality in the distribution of resources, promote oneness, improve social relationships, and enable people to work towards the common good of South Africa.

    Requirements for an online extension

    • A valid email address. The Department of Home Affairs permits more than one person to use the same email address to apply.
    • Please provide a signed template with your full name and surname, mobile phone numbers, permit number, and physical address.
    • Submit a valid copy of your current visa. If you lose it, submit an affidavit that shows it is missing and the permit reference number of the missing visa.
    • Submit an affidavit confirming your physical address or a utility bill that shows proof of your physical address.

    Note

All asylum seekers have to submit individual applications even if the entire family is applying. You are required to sign the extension request for minors if you are the principal applicant. Their extension request must carry the same signature as their lost or expired permits.

General Education Certificate: Everything You Need to Know

    0

General Education Certificate gives students the liberty to leave from Grade 9 and choose to enrol into institutions that provide vocational, technical, and occupational skills. South African students will have the opportunity to choose between attending a regular high school and attending a vocational college. The General Education Certificate will allow students to apply for positions in these vocational training schools instead of universities.

Students enrolled in such schools will be the equivalent of Grade 10 students. However, they will be skilled in areas such as welding, construction, agriculture, sport, aviation, etc. Here, students will focus on one of these aspects and become experts by the end of their training. While some professionals see the General Education Certificate as a way out, others are worried that it may not be as rosy as it sounds.

In this article, we will discuss the importance, advantages, and disadvantages of the General Education Certificate.

What do you require to have a General Certificate of Education?

    • Only Grade 9 students are eligible to have a General Education Certificate. They will receive it at the end of their Grade 9 school year.

Will General Education Certificate cause a change?

Yes, it will. As with any other new idea, it will come with cons and pros affecting different sections of society and the educational system.

Is the General Education Certificate important?

Again, yes, it is. Here are some reasons why it is important.

    • It offers students a host of opportunities to follow their passion while gaining modern-day skills.
    • General Education Certificate will cause TVET colleges to become more significant. The rise in the number of TVET colleges may push older colleges to better equip their faculties to keep up with the competition. This is advantageous for the students.
    • Additionally, there may be fewer strikes from students in TVET colleges leading to a reduction in the number of absent hours.

What are the advantages of a General Education Certificate?

    • Students will get a certificate to apply to colleges at the end of Grade 9 instead of waiting for Grade 12.
    • It will enable students to follow their true passion at an early age and give them room to perfect it.
    • Technical and vocational schools in South Africa will increase in number when this gets implemented. More of them will pop up to cater to the needs of the students who wish to enroll in their institutions.
    • Students in Grade 9 will have new subjects that are more practical than theoretical in their curriculum.
    • Companies can integrate graduates from these schools because they are sure they have both theoretical and standard practical knowledge.
    • Students may have more openings for internship and apprenticeship opportunities once the program is implemented.
    • The General Education Certificate can reduce the number of students who drop out of school. The reason being they can look forward to having careers sooner than their peers in regular school.
    • Some professionals are excited about this because it will take out unnecessary subjects and replace them with profitable skills.
    • The General Education Certificate will assist in evaluating the skill level of students leaving Grade 9.

What are the disadvantages of a General Education Certificate?

While the General Education Certificate has multiple pros, it also has multiple cons in store. Here is a list of those disadvantages.

    • The General Education Certificate only allows students to apply to colleges. Therefore, students who want to go to the university must complete Grade 12 and get a National Senior Certificate.
    • Some TVET colleges have an inefficient administration that seldom meets the students’ needs.
    • Students who graduate with a National Senior Certificate have proven to be more emotionally mature and capable of critical thinking. While those who enter the professional sector after Grade 9 still have a lot of growing up to do.
    • Some authorities fear that students who get the General Certificate of Education may be unwilling to further their studies. It is a grave problem because they will not improve on their craft and will stick with outdated techniques.
    • Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions are notorious for having inadequate equipment and facilities that are not up to standard.

Summarily, introducing the General Education Certificate is part of the government’s plan to improve the number of skilled individuals in society. Students often go to school for many years to get an elaborate degree. However, they graduate without having a skill that is profitable in today’s changing world.

They end up facing difficulties in the real world when they realize that robots have taken their jobs. Even worse, some find it hard to pick up new skills later in life. The General Education Certificate provides light at the end of the tunnel. Although it has its shortcomings, it is a good option for society to embrace.

What is APS (Admission Point Score)?

    0

    What is Admission Point Score?

Admission Point Score (APS) is the basis universities use to decide wherever or not you are fit to study a particular course. Colleges use it to know if they will accept your application or not. Admission Point Score is the average of your matric marks. The marks are converted to points that fall below 10. After summing individual points, the total point forms your APS. The highest APS score is 42, and it is attainable.

    Why is your APS important?

Your APS is important because sir contributes to a major decision in your life. Your APS determines if you will study Human Resources or Law. It is what universities consider when assessing your strengths and ability to study a course. You have to understand that universities have diverse APS that they consider acceptable for a course.

For example, University A may require a higher APS to study engineering compared to University B. Generally; universities use your final Matric results to calculate your APS. Students with very high APS may get accepted in multiple universities to study their choice program. On the contrary, those with low APS may have difficulty finding a school that will let them study their programme of choice. Additionally, APS enables administrators to reduce their workload during admission.

How do you get your APS?

You can get your APS through your final Matric exam results. Get hold of your certificate to know your results. Your APS is based on your score in 6 National Certificate subjects that are recognized. These subjects include:

    • Agricultural Science
    • Geography
    • Consumer Studies
    • Accounting
    • Life Sciences
    • Dramatic Arts
    • Mathematical Literacy
    • Business Studies
    • Mathematics
    • History
    • Information Technology
    • Languages
    • Religion Studies
    • Engineering Graphics and Design
    • Visual Arts
    • Music
    • Economics
    • Physical Science

You cannot use subjects like Life Orientation and CAT to calculate your APS. Here is how it works.

    • Your matric results are presented in the form of percentages or symbols. Additionally, you get a point for each subject in your matric results, depending on your percentage.

    Score between 80% – 100% your APS is 7

    Score between 70% – 79% your APS is 6

    Score between 60% – 69% your APS is 5

    Score between 50% – 59% your APS is 4

    Score between 40% – 49% your APS is 3

    Score between 30% – 39% your APS is 2

    Score between 20% – 29% your APS is 1

    • Sum your APS for every subject to form your total APS. This is the value universities will use to access the programme you are fit to enrol in.
    • You need a minimum APS of 15 points to enrol in a Higher Certificate programme.
    • You need a minimum APS of 18 points to enrol in a Diploma programme.
    • Bachelors programmes generally require a minimum APS of 21 points.

Universities: Admission Point Score (APS) Calculation

Universities calculate your Admission Point Score Based on their unique formula. The minimum APS that each university considers acceptable for a programme différés from other universities. Furthermore, while some universities only consider National Certificate subjects that are recognized, other universities don’t have such specificity.

What to do once you know your APS

You can check the APS that your chosen university requires for the programme you want to study. You should do this early so that you know your stand. If you are not eligible for one university, look for other universities where your APS is acceptable for that programme. However, if you have an APS that is below the bare minimum, you can rewrite your matric exam. Then use your results to apply to your university of choice the following year.

    Scholarships and Bursaries

First-year South African students who have excellent APS scores are eligible for scholarships. They can benefit from a discount of up to R40,000 on their tuition fees. These students may also get academic merit awards from universities. Universities use the final Grade 12 result to calculate the bursary for which you are eligible.

Students generally do have to apply for merit-based awards. Despite setting aside an amount to cover the cost of scholarships or bursaries, each faculty still has different requirements. This means that you may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship with your APS score in one faculty but ineligible in another faculty with the same score. Additionally, some universities consider formerly disadvantaged students who were high performers for scholarships.

    Note

Please note that universities have other entry requirements asides your APS. Some of these requirements are specific to your chosen programme. Additionally, having the minimum APS is not advisable. This is because getting into most universities is competitive. There are only limited spaces, and having a more than average APS can increase your chances of getting admitted. Remember, you are not the only one seeking admission to study that programme.

NSFAS Funding: Everything You Need to Know to Apply

    0

For many South Africans who can or plan to study further, the cost of higher education makes it nearly impossible for competent and gifted South Africans to access tertiary education; NSFAS bridges that gap. NSFAS provides loans to eligible South Africans who want to continue their education through specific colleges or universities, and unlike a traditional loan, students only need to pay back the NSFAS loan if they don’t complete their studies or when they get a job and reach an income of more than R30,000 a year.

    How NSFAS Works

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme gives student loans at low-interest rates, which they only need to repay when they get a job. At the start of the process, you need to be accepted by a TVET college or university. Keep in mind that not all colleges accept NSFAS. From there, you will be assessed by NSFAS based on the information provided in your application.

Then, if you are approved for a loan, you will need to sign a legally binding loan agreement that discloses the repayment terms, including how much you’re going to repay when you get a job.

Students will only start repaying the NSFAS loan after they get a job where they earn more than R30,000 annually. When you earn between R30 000 and R59 300 a year, you only pay 3% of your annual salary to repay NSFAS loans. However, if your income is more than R59 300, this will be bumped up to 8%, which equates to R395 a month.

After signing the loan agreement, NSFAS will pay the funds to the university and provide you with finances to cover the cost of attending a tertiary education, such as housing allowances.

The loans cover TVET colleges as well as universities. However, not all TVET colleges accept NSFAS.

How Do I Apply for NSFAS Online?

Applying for NSFAS funding is quick and easy. The entire process can be completed online with very limited paperwork involved. But, to make the process even easier, this step-by-step process should be of assistance.

Step 1: Create a MyNSFAS Account

If you have never applied for NSFAS funding before, you need to create a myNSFAS profile. When creating a profile, you will need to insert a valid ID number, email address, and phone number. You will also need to create a password and upload a copy of your ID.

Note: Those using a Smart ID will need to attach the back and front of their IDs.

    Step 2: Complete an Application

After creating the account, you will need to sign in using the email address and password you entered. On your dashboard, you will see a tab “Apply” click on it to be taken to the application form.

From there, you will need to input more information, like your educational background, household income, job status, address, and so on. Ensure you fill in all the spaces on the form accurately and honestly, as NSFAS will double-check the information you provide with third parties like SARS and South African banks.

    Step 3: Upload Supporting Documents

To complete your application process –– and ensure NSFAS can process your application –– you will need to upload all supporting documents, which include:

    • A copy of a valid ID (which can include a temporary ID from Home Affairs)
    • Copy of your spouse, parent/s, or legal guardian’s ID
    • Proof of income for income earners in your household, e.g. parents, legal guardians, or spouse (for non-SASSA applicants)
    • If you have a disability: complete annexure A form

Step 4: Submit Your NSFAS Application and Wait for Feedback

After you’ve uploaded your supporting documents, you can click submit on the application. Just be sure that you have all the necessary information, as your application may be declined if your application is lacking.

Is NSFAS Open for 2025 Applications?

NSFAS applications for 2025 start in September and end in January. During this three-month window, students can apply or reapply for funding for the upcoming school year.

Even beyond 2025, you will also need to submit your application between the beginning of September and the beginning of January.

However, in 2025 NSFAS has chosen to extend the application deadline by two weeks. Instead of the application deadline ending on 7 January, it will end on 31st January 2024.

How Do I Check my Status on myNSFAS?

After applying for NSFAS funding, waiting for an outcome can be frustrating, not only because you may need the money to pay for your further education but also because many of your hopes and dreams rely on your funding being approved.

For that reason, you should know how to find your status on myNSFAS.

Step 1: Login to Your myNSFAS Profile

Visit the myNSFAS portal and enter your login details.

Step 2: Navigate to Track Application

Once you’re on your dashboard, navigate to the tab that says “Track Application.” From there, you will be redirected to a page that will show you the status of your NSFAS application.

Who is Eligible for NSFAS Funding, and What is the Age Limit for NSFAS?

South Africa has a very unique tertiary education system, as many people well into adulthood are still completing undergraduate programs and degrees or attending TVET colleges as they may not have had the opportunity to before. Because of this, many people want to know if NSFAS has an age limit. You may be happy to know that NSFAS does not have an age limit, so whether you’re 18 to 80, you can apply for NSFAS.

However, there are criteria you need to meet to apply for NSFAS, which include:

    • Combined household income not exceeding R350,000 or R600,000 if you have a disability.
    • You must have applied to and been accepted by the university or TVET you want NSFAS to fund
    • You must be studying for an undergraduate degree.

If you meet these criteria, you can apply for NSFAS.
