    SOLTRAIN (Southern African Solar Thermal Training and Demonstration Initiative) was formed in 2009 as a regional program on capacity building and demonstration of solar thermal systems in the SADC region. SOLTRAIN is funded by the Austrian Development Agency and OFID, and their aim is to support targeted countries to move away from majority fossil energy supply system, to a sustainable supply structure based on renewable energy and particularly solar thermal.

    In South African, SOLTRAIN’s local partners are SANEDI (South African National Energy Development Insitute) and Stellenbosch University’s CRSES (Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies).

    ABOUT THE SOLTRAIN BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & SELECTION

    SOLTRAIN are inviting Postgraduate students to apply for the Solar Thermal Project Support Scheme, for studies within the second half of the 2021 academic year. Students who are from one of SOLTRAIN partner countries (which include: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Mozambique), pursuing studies within the solar thermal energy area may apply.

    The value of the bursary is a maximum of €2500 Euro (equivalent to over R43 000 South African Rand).

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SOLTRAIN BURSARY

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

    • You must be a South African citizen OR a citizen of one of these countries: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho or Mozambique
    • You must be registered for Postgraduate studies for the second half of the 2021 academic year
    • Your area of study must be solar thermal energy (the following topics will be given preference):
      • Topics related to the use of solar thermal technologies for cooling, heating or drying within industrial applications
      • Analysis of measurement data from certain systems from the SOLTRAIN project (SOLTRAIN will be provide measurement data; analysis of measured data with economic/ technical input)
      • Potential analysis for solar thermal systems within the health sector (calculation of hospital and clinics hot water consumption; survey hospitals and clinics, including amount of beds and monthly average number of patients; derivation of potential for thermal solar systems for the health sector)
      • Documentation and analysis of mass housing programmes with essential solar water heater installation: South Africa and Namibian students only (documentation of the programme, including: location, number of houses, number and size of installed Solar Water Heaters; large quantity questionnaire interview with focus on satisfaction with the Solar Water Heater; lessons learned)

    MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SERVICE CONTRACT

    Bursaries will be awarded to the value of R78 334 per annum for MSc students (for 2 years) and R94 817 per annum for PhD students (for 3 years). Bursary funding must be used to offset the cost of tuition fees, prescribed textbooks, living expenses and other study materials.

    Once students have graduated, they must work within the maize industry of South Africa, for a duration of time equal to that of the bursary received.

    ABOUT THE OMT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES – FIELDS COVERED

    The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) are inviting students to apply for the Postgraduate funding, for the 2022 academic year.

    The OMT will be awarding funding for 3 types of scholarships:

    1) OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate Local Studies: covers postgraduate studies at Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral level, at public Higher Education Institutions in South Africa.

    2) OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate International Studies: covers postgraduate studies at Master’s, Doctoral and Postdoctoral level, at International Higher Education Institutions. Available to students with an excellent academic record who wish to follow a career in research, academia, development or related fields in South Africa.

    3) OMT Scholarship for Sabbatical Studies: covers full-time academics undertaking sabbatical study, studying at public Higher Education Institutions in South Africa.

    MORE ABOUT THE OMT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMMES – COVERAGE VALUE & RENEWAL

    The value of the scholarship will depend on the students personal circumstances – however, it is NOT a full-cost scholarship and students are required to apply for alternate sources of funding to cover outstanding fees.

    Scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time and renewals are not automatic – they will be renewed based on academic performance and compliance with the OMT’s reporting requirements and re-application procedures.

    The OMT Scholarship for Postgraduate Local and International Studies: the maximum duration of funding varies according to the level of study:

    • Masters students may receive up to a maximum of 2 years of funding (exceptions can be made for Master’s students who are upgrading to PhD studies)
    • Postdoctoral students may receive up to a maximum of 2 years of funding
    • PhD students may receive up to a maximum of 3 years of funding

     

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE OMT SCHOLARSHIPS

    • You must be a full-time academic, undertaking sabbatical study
    • You must be studying at a public Higher Education Institution within South Africa
    • Preference will be given to students with proven records of teaching and research

Any balance of funds not spent on tuition fees, can be used to cover the cost of prescribed books and other study-related expenses up to the maximum amount.

    Samancor Chrome was established in 1975, when a a merger occurred between 2 companies, namely SA Manganese Ltd and Amcor Ltd. Prior to the merger, SA Manganese mined manganese; while Amcor exploited mineral deposits and processed the minerals into ferroalloys for the steel industry.     ABOUT THE UFS STAR OF STARS BURSARY COMPETITION

    The University of the Free State are inviting Matric students to apply for the Star of Stars Competition, for studies at UFS in 2022, in ANY field of study. Students who are residing in the Free State province, who are top achievers in academics and leadership, and/ or involved in community projects, should apply.

    Students will be evaluated and selected based on 3 main categories: academic performance, leadership achievements, and community involvement. Recipients will receive prize money, personal development, and exposure.

    10 finalists will be selected after a thorough judging and evaluation process. The Star of Stars competition winner, as well as the finalist with the best individual achievement and the finalist with the most spirited personality will be announced at a prestigious gala dinner, at the start of the 2022 academic year.

    MORE ABOUT THE UFS STAR OF STARS BURSARY COMPETITION – SELECTION & AWARDING OF BURSARIES

    • Top 20 finalists will be announced on 25 September 2021 and will be invited to a weekend during the September school holidays.
    • Top 20 finalists who are selected in September 2021, must achieve a minimum AP score of 34 in their Matric finals.
    • Top 10 finalists will be required to attend the Star of Stars weekend and the gala event in February 2022.
    • The Star of Stars winner will be announced during a gala evening in February 2022.
    • Bursaries and prize money will be paid in 2022 after the student registers to study at the UFS.
    • Top 10 finalists will be required to sign an agreement that they will study at the UFS in 2022.
    • Transportation will be provided for the top 10 finalists for the Star of Stars weekends, to and from Bloemfontein.

    There is no work back obligations/ service contract, bursary recipients must be ambassadors for the SAIEE.

    Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview at the SAIEE offices in Johannesburg or via video conference.

    The Cecil Renaud Educational and Charitable Trust has awarded 36 scholarships since 1994.
