    1) The Pure Merit Bursary will be awarded based on academic results alone, for students who don’t need extensive funding

    The JB Marks Education Trust Fund was formed in 1997 by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), as a means to address the need for empowering NUM members and dependents of NUM members, specifically those studying towards qualifications in the construction, mining and energy sectors.

    The Trust was named after John Beaver Marks, a South African activest and leader and strong believer in empowerment and emancipation for workers via education. The Trust’s mission has always been to fund the educational expenses of its members and since its inception has funded over 1000 bursars and awarded over R280 million to more than 2000 beneficiaries.

    Most of the funding is received from the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT) via Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC) dividends.

    ABOUT THE JB MARKS EDUCATION TRUST FUND BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

    Every year, the JB Marks Education Trust Fund invites undergraduate and postgraduate students to apply for their bursary award. The bursary is available to NUM members and their dependents (including children and spouses). There will be 200 bursaries awarded for undergraduate studies and 50 bursaries awarded for postgraduate studies.

    Bursaries will be awarded for studies in critical fields only (as defined and approved by the Board of Trustees) will be accepted.

    The value of the bursary is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on the field of study, and will be awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis due to a limitation on funding.

    Successful candidates will be contacted with an acceptance letter (via physical delivery, post or email), as well as to all NUM national branches. If you do not receive any correspondence or acceptance letter by 31 December 2021, and your name is not on the NUM regional list, regard your application as unsuccessful.

    Please note the following terms and conditions before applying:

    • The bursary award can NOT be used to pay off existing study loans or debts.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

    • South African citizen
    • Between 18 and 34 years old
    • From the previously disadvantaged group per the South African government guidelines (Indian, Coloured or African)
    • Studying (or intend on studying) at a University or University of Technology in South Africa
    • Achieved a minimum overall average of 70% for Matric
    • Achieved a minimum overall average of 65% for latest tertiary results (if a currently tertiary student)
    • Proven financial need
    • Currently unemployed
    • Willing to give back to the community and take part in upliftment programmes
    • Dedicated to your studies and have a positive attitude
