The Centre for Development Research has an objective to cooperate within Ph.D. and Master’s programmes and prepare students to become the next leaders who meet social, economic, and political challenges that stem from the development process. The research-oriented training programs have been established at the University of the Western Cape and Ruhr-University of Bochum for quite some time with the course offerings coming from the disciplines of social sciences, economics, and administrative sciences.
ABOUT THE SA-GER CDR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
The South African-German Centre for Development Research (SA-GER CDS) is offering a 2-year DAAD merit scholarship program for a Masters degree in Development Studies. Studies will be conducted at the ISD (Institute for Social Development), School of Government, at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).
Candidates who plan to establish a career in social development and the economic sector in fields such as activists, policy-makers, administrators, researchers, developers, or teachers at universities may apply.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SA-GER CDR SCHOLARSHIP
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be from a Sub-Saharan African country (this includes South Africa. See the list of here Sub-Sahara African countries)
- You must have completed a Degree related to Developmental Studies
- You must have completed an Honours Degree in order to qualify for a Masters Degree course (South African Students)
- You must completed have a 4 year Undergraduate Degree or equivalent to qualify for a Masters Degree course (students from countries other than South Africa)
- You must have an academic record with a 70% average for your latest Degree
- You must hust have completed studies at an internationally recognised university
- You must be fluent in the English language – written and oral (students must provide evidence of this in the form of TOEFL TEST/ similar from an academic institution)
- You must have previous work or voluntary experience in your field of interest (advantageous)
- You must apply within 6 years of completing your Degree
- You must be able to complete the programme on a full-time basis at UWC
- You must be available for the interview period
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SA-GER CDR SCHOLARSHIP
Applications must be submitted online at: SA-GER CDR Masters Scholarship Application 2022
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your online application (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- A letter of application that motivated your application
- A copy of your Matric certificate
- A certified copy of your Identity Document
- A copy of your Passport
- An updated Curriculum Vitae stating all work experience as an intern/ employee (candidates are to use the Europass CV Form)
- An academic transcript from your latest university
- Certified copies of your academic certificates
- An academic reference
- A professional reference (if applicable)
MA applicants will be required to write a paper (1 page) consisting of one of three topics. This paper is to be uploaded in the e-form.
The topics of the Call are:
1. Write critical notes on how inequality can be measured. What do you regard as the causes of inequality in your country?
2. What are the prospects for a successful Developmental State model in any African country of your choice?
3. hat do you see as the root causes of migration? How can these be addressed?
Please note:
- Women and South African students are strongly encouraged to apply
- Candidates applying for MA/ M Econ in Development Studies, and PhD can apply for the scholarship without applying to study at UWC. Should these candidates be rewarded a scholarship/ they plan to finance themselves, they can then apply for admission via the online application procedure
- The electronic application form is only available during an open call
- The application form can only be submitted once, so ensure that all information is accurate
- If referees wish to send references independently, they can email them to: ifo.uwc@cdr-sa.org, ensuring that the candidate’s name is indicated
- Any plagiarised papers will result in disqualification
- Certificates or transcripts in languages other than English and Afrikaans must be submitted with an English translation certified by a Public Notary
- Applicants will be notified until the end of August
- The scholarship covers all tuition and registration fees
- Interviews with shortlisted candidates will be conducted 6-8 weeks after the deadline. This will be done either telephonically, in person, or via Skype
