    Early life and personal life

Gobeni springs from eThekwini, him and his family moved to eThekwini in 1995 when he was only 6 years old. They then moved around in eThekwini until he went to University. While in High School, Anathi did all 8 subjects that were available and excelled well in school.

In fact in his final year he got a B in his Physical Sciences. However, he did not like accounting at all and up to this day doesn’t like it. He did drama in high school as a result of the school’s only history teacher retiring, forcing them to choose another subject. Anathi was going to grade 11 when he decided to replace history with drama. And, things went well after that.

When Anathi Gobeni finished high school, he was under a lot of pressure concerning his career choice. His mother wanted him to be a computer scientist as he was smart. However, his father wanted him to be an accountant, and even though he hated accounting, he applied for it. But, he himself wanted to pursue drama which was his third choice. However, after the first 2 choices took time to respond and DUT had already responded he rushed to his dream. Gobeni then enrolled at the Durban University of Technology to study drama and graduated with a National Diploma in Drama in 2015.

    Career beginnings and s.e.xuality

In his first year, Anathi had already played lead roles in at least 20 theatrical productions. At this point he was finally getting more open and expressive about his s.e.xuality. Though he was never mocked about it in his childhood, Anathi says the biggest challenge was coming out. He felt the need to come out because of the family expectations. However, Anathi knew from at least the age of 9 that he wasn’t into girls and liked boys. In an interview with Kungenzeka Nakuwe, he shed some light on the stereotypes and truths of homos.e.xuality. Stressing that for him it wasn’t a choice and that people misunderstand because of their lack of education.

Getting the role of Lindo on Imbewu: The seed

The story of how Anathi became Lindo on Imbewu is a very perculiar one. She was shopping for some groceries and she saw an elderly man following her by. The man kept following from a distance so she kept diverting him. But after a long pursuit, she looked back and it was him, Duma Ndlovu in the flesh. Duma Ndlovu is the creator of so many South African stories, Imbewu, Uzalo, Muvhango and many more. He was interested in Anathi, problem because of his wide aclaim at DUT. Duma then gave him his email and later on came to Durban again to audition him and one other indian girl for the imbewu cast.

But after the auditions, it took a lot of months before he landed the role. In fact, he had quit his job for about a month when it all happened. From here, it was all smooth sailing . And Anathi says young aspiring actors should consider getting formal education to make it.

Mike Nkuna Profile-Biography, Net Worth, Career & Age

We(zainfo.co.za team) are pleased to inform you about Mike Nkuna Profile-Biography, Net Worth, Career & Age

Mike Nkuna is a South African businessman best known for founding Masingita group of companies which owns at least ten shopping centres including malls in South Africa. In addition to that, he has acquired franchises in various retail filling stations including Exel Garage, Shell Garage, Sasol Garage and BP Garage.

In 2020 the entrepreneur Mike Nkuna was awarded with a Honorary Doctoral Degree by the University of Johannesburg for his outstanding contributions as one of the most successful commercial and retail property developers in South Africa.

    Biography Facts

    Full name: Mike Nkuna
    Gender: Male
    Date of birth: 1950 -1960
Age: 60 to 70 years old
Place of birth: Giyani, Limpopo Province
    Nationality: South African
    Occupation: Businessman
    Years Active: 1982 to present
Networth: R2.2 Billion or $ 157 million USD.

    Early life of Mike Nkuna

He was born in the 1950s or 60s in Giyani in the province of Limpopo in South Africa. He obtained his primary and probably his secondary school in Limpopo before relocating to Gauteng Province. Growing up in Limpopo, Nkuna was his father’s herdboy shepherding his father’s cattles and livestocks. After that he began working in his father’s butchery in 1979 to support his family before initiating his multimillion businesses. [ ¹]

From rags to riches: How Mike Nkuna became a millionaire?

After three years of working at his father’s butcher shop, Nkuna decided to branch out and start a small housing building company at a time when the government was subsidising black people’ housing. Nkuna’s first big break came in 1983. Soweto’s municipality was trying to sell a piece of property, which they offered to Nkuna. After securing a loan from Pem Bank, he purchased the plot for R100 000 with the intention of developing it.

British Petroleum proposed to buy the site from him and build a filling station on it after he purchased it. Nkuna, on the other hand, declined and instead asked BP to assist him in developing the property into a modest convenience retail centre that would feature, among other things, a BP filling station. BP loved the concept and provided him a zero-interest loan to help him develop the property.

Nkuna approached Shell with his narrative idea to see what kind of deal they could offer him at the same time. Shell outperformed BP’s offer, much to his surprise. In a game of one-upmanship, Nkuna returned to BP with Shell’s offer, causing BP to increase their offer.

Mike Nkuna business dream turned reality

He founded a tiny convenience store in 1986, which became Soweto’s first organised shopping centre. Previously, the township only had a few scattered corner shops that had sprouted up all over. He quickly began working on similar projects in and around Soweto.

Nkuna decided to create a mall as a result of his success with his shopping centres. OK Bazaars was approached to be his anchor tenant. Nkuna was hired by the corporation to undertake a demographic analysis in order to determine the feasibility of such a venture. It indicated that, while the demographics of the area were good, political instability at the time and public opinions about shopping in Soweto were roadblocks. According to the study, the majority of Soweto residents considered that whatever sold in the townships was inferior to what they could get in the city.

Rather than abandoning the plan, Nkuna chose to build shopping centres in rural places, where people would drive between 150 and 200 kilometers to conduct their shopping. In 1990, he relocated his family to Giyani in order to be closer to the projects he was working on. He built two shopping malls in Giyani with the help of Absa Bank.

Masingita Group Formation and other business deals

Then, in 2004, Nedbank approached Nkuna and asked if they might join with him to speed commercial and retail property development in historically disadvantaged areas, drawing on his uncommon and significant knowledge in township property development. Masingita Property Investment Holdings (MPIH) was established to that goal. Nkuna owned 65 percent of the company, while Nedbank owned the remaining 35 percent.

MPIH erected Bara Mall in 2005, and Nkuna’s long-cherished ambition was finally realised in October of last year when Jabulani Mall opened. “Jabulani was Soweto’s first full-service shopping mall, and it set numerous records. It covered 45 000 square metres and had 110 tenants, including big national brands such as Woolworths, Truworths, Game, Foschini, and others “Nkuna agrees. Resilient and MPIH jointly own Jabulani, with Resilient holding 55 percent and MPIH 45 percent, respectively. [ ²]

    Vandalism of his business premises

In July 2021 Nkuna’s two shopping mall premises were not spared from the vandalism that occurred as a result of the arrest of former South African president Jacob Zuma. These malls include Protea Mall whi is valued at R700 million while his Jabulani Mall is worth an estimated value of R1.4 billion. [ ³]

Recognition by The University of Johannesburg

In 2020 the entrepreneur Mike Nkuna was recognized by the College of Business and Economics at the University of Johannesburg and was nominated for a PhD Honoris Causa (Entrepreneurship). The University of Johannesburg awarded him with a Honorary Doctoral Degree for his outstanding contributions as one of the most successful commercial and retail property developers in South Africa.

    Maponga’s controversial philosophy

    Maponga J III Mara-rah

Maponga has a Christian-like, rastafarian and African philosophy which he preaches under the name of “the gospel according to Maponga”. He has derived his own philosophy and belief system which resembles African culture and Christian beliefs. In briefly, Maponga believes that Africans do not need to abandon their culture and traditions to believe in God.

According to Maponga Christianity was colonized by white people and was westernized. Therefore he believes that Christianity needs to be liberated from western culture. He also argues that if Jesus was white he would not have died for a black man because a white man, as far as Maponga knows, has got no heart big enough to die for a black man.

In one of his sermons, Maponga says, “…the day a white Jesus will die for black people, I will believe in a white Jesus”. He furthermore accuses white people of continuously manipulating black people by promising them heaven while they loot their wealth. “…they (white people and their white Jesus) promise Africans gold in heaven while they are taking gold from Africans.

It doesn’t make sense at all that you are being promised to walk on gold in heaven while they are taking gold from you, ” says J Maponga. He says a black man is still hanging on the cross with one thief, the Europeans, on the left and another thief, the Chinese on the right stealing his minerals.

    Maponga’s Homophobic Accusations

    In 2018 Maponga appeared before the Port Elizabeth Equality Court in South Africa over claims that homos.e.xual people are lower than animals. Joshua Maponga admitted he may have gone too far but reiterated that he saw no reason for him to be “hanged on the cross” and expected to change church policies or the Bible. His apology to South African Human Rights Commission qoutes;

“It is unfortunate that I used the illustration of ‘dogs’ to make the point about this Bible text. I am sorry for the pain I caused and I understand the seriousness of the issue of the right to be treated with dignity and the preaching of the gospel without dehumanizing other people. The extent of the damage caused by the debate and the sermon cannot be revoked.”

    Extramarital affairs

In April 2021 an unnamed woman from New Castle, KwaZulu-Natal Province told Daily Sun that she was having an affair with Bishop Maponga. She claimed that she was impregnated by the former SDA Bishop Maponga but had a miscarriage. The anonymous woman continued to say Maponga was even planning to do a ceremony and rituals for their dead child.

But Maponga denied all these allegations and accused the lady of harassment and extortion. He said he only supported her T-shirts business but the lady continued to send long texts looking for financial help regarding her spiritual calling. ¹
