    The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation is the association of food science, technology and other professionals serving South Africa’s food and allied industries. SAAFoST aims at increasing the knowledge base of food science and technology by encouraging scientific research, a membership magazine publication, workshops, seminars, exhibitions, meetings and assisting in educational activities. The company is non-profit and mainly run by volunteers, with around 2000 members across Southern Africa.

    SAAFoST have established the SAAFoST Foundation, who will be responsible for the administration of SAAFoST academic bursaries, awards and prizes.

    ABOUT THE SAAFOST BURSARY PROGRAMMES – FIELDS COVERED & COVERAGE VALUE

    The South African Association for Food Science and Technology (SAAFoST) Foundation are inviting students to apply for bursaries, within the Food Science and Technology field of study. Bursaries are awarded based on 3 major factors – academic merit, demonstrated potential and employment equity.

    SAAFoST will be awarding 3 types of bursaries for the 2022 academic year:
    1) SAAFoST Matriculant Bursary: covers students currently in Matric, who intend on studying full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field. The bursary will provide cover for tuition fees up to a maximum of R35 000 per year. Payments will be made in 2 instalments, to the tertiary institution where the recipient is undertaking studies.

    2) SAAFoST Undergraduate Bursary: covers students pursuing full time studies towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field. The bursary will provide cover for tuition fees up to a maximum of R35 000 per year. Payments will be made in 2 instalments, to the tertiary institution where the recipient is undertaking studies. Find more information here.

    3) SAAFoST Part-Time Bursary for SAAFoST Members: covers SAAFoST paid up full members, studying part time studies towards a BSc Hons or BTech qualification, within the Food Science and Technology field. The bursary will provide cover for tuition fees up to a maximum of R35 000 (or prorata) over 2 years. Payments will be made in 2 instalments, to the tertiary institution where the recipient is undertaking studies. Find more information here.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SAAFOST MATRICULANT BURSARY

    Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

    • You must be a South African citizen
    • You must have been a resident within South Africa for a minimum of 3 years before applying
    • You must be currently in Matric
    • You must be enrolled and accepted to study full time towards a first undergraduate Degree or Diploma within the Food Science and Technology field
    • You must be enrolled and accepted to study at a recognised tertiary institute in South Africa
    • You must have completed a Further Education & Training Certificate (FETC) (General) qualification or the equivalent
    • You must have achieved a minimum of level 5 (60 to 69%) for Physical Science and Mathematics in Matric (and Life Science is recommended)
    • Preference will be given to Matric students with strong academic results or potential
    • You must register as a SAAFoST member within the 3 months of registration at your selected tertiary institution, and you must remain an active member of SAAFoST for the entire duration of study (find out more about SAAFoST Membership here – applications for students is free)

    NOTES ABOUT THE SAAFOST MATRICULANT BURSARY

    • Bursaries will be awarded for 1 academic year at a time and funding will be awarded for subsequent years, only if they are able to finish their qualification within the allocated amount of time.
    • Students pursuing Undergraduate Degree up to B.Sc (Hons), must complete their studies within a maximum timeframe of 4 years.
    • Students pursuing Diplomas, must complete their studies within a maximum timeframe of 4 years.
    • Students pursuing a BTech Degree, must complete their studies within a maximum timeframe of 5 years.
    • The bursary will be administered by the SAAFoST Foundation, in liaison with the relevant institutions Student Liaison Representatives.
    • The SAAFoST Foundation reserves the right not to award any bursaries.
    • Bursary recipients must submit 6 monthly reports and exam results to the SAAFoST Foundation, as well as details of participation in SAAFoST activities.
    • SAAFoST bursaries will be converted into a repayable loan if: a semester or year is failed; studies are terminated or interrupted including course changes; and studies are incomplete.
    • All applications will be reviewed in November 2021 and successful recipients will be announced in December 2021.
    • The National Benchmarking Test (NBT) results, or equivalent will be considered on final selection.

    The Imam Abdullah Haron Education Trust (IAHET) was established in 2005 in memory of the late Imam Abdullah Haron, killed in police detention in 1969 after fighting against the Apartheid regime. The Trust aims to honour Imam Haron’s vision, which included empowering previously disadvantaged individuals and groups by way of education.

    The IAHET aims to provide education funding all the way from pre-primary (ie. early childhood development project grants) until postgraduate studies (bursaries).

    Bursaries are funded solely by means of donations from individuals and companies at the Corporate Golf Day held each year. Together with the Muslim Educational Movement and the Hospital Welfare, IAHET are able to administer these fantastic bursary opportunities. Since the inception of the programme in 2006, the IAHET has provided funding to 385 deserving tertiary students, to the value of over R2.7 million.

    ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS OF STUDY

    The IAHET bursary is aimed at students of all races, genders and religious beliefs – everyone is welcome to apply, so long as they meet the criteria as stated below. Bursaries will be awarded to students enrolled at tertiary institution (who are recognised by the Department of Higher Education and Training), in ALL fields of study.

    ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE & SELECTION PROCESS

    30 partial bursaries will be awarded to deserving students, to the value of R10 000 each. This funding is aimed at helping students cover the cost of transport, prescribed books and general living expenses.

    Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited to attend an interview. Should you not receive any feedback on your application within 6 weeks of the deadline, please regard your application as unsuccessful.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

    The bursary will be awarded to the total value of R36 000.00 and will be awarded for 1 academic year only. Students must reapply for funding each year and may be funded if academic performance is satisfactory.

    The successful bursary recipient will be contacted by mid January 2020 – if you do not receive any feedback by that time, please regarding your application as unsuccessful.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

    SAB are focused on helping South African students achieve their career goals by funding their studies.

    Bursaries are available for students within the following fields of study (BSc degree):

    • Engineering

    Students are selected based on academic performance and recognised talent and are expected to maintain the level of high academic performance and behavioural conduct throughout the bursary duration.

    Chosen students are also given the opportunity to gain work experience via vacation work or summer school. On completion of their studies, bursars are given the option to join the SAB workforce as full-time graduate trainees.

    The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) was formed in order to ensure substantial growth of the film and video industry in South Africa, by providing funding for the development and training of filmmakers, as well as for producing, developing, distribution and marketing of films

    The NFVF is a statutory body and an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture. The main objectives of the NFVF are to: increase the accessibility of South African films; to increase the amount of films in South Africa and the amount of producers for previously disadvantaged backgrounds; to increase the amount of training within the film industry and in scarce skills areas; to locally and internationally promote the film industry of South Africa.

    ABOUT THE NFVF BURSARY PROGRAMMES – FIELDS COVERED, COVERAGE VALUE & SELECTION

    The NFVF are offering 2 types of bursaries for the 2022 academic year, aimed at helping previously disadvantaged students pursue their studies within the Film and Television industry (NOT performance arts and acting courses), but who lack the funding to do so. The National bursary is intended for studies within South Africa, and the International bursary for studies outside of South Africa, for courses NOT available in South Africa.

    The NFVF National bursary will provide cover will for tuition fees only – 1st year students will receive full funding, and the following years of study will receive 80% funding. Students are NOT required to pay back or work back the bursary. The bursary does NOT cover outstanding tertiary fees. Candidates will be selected based on academic merit and/or financial need.

    The NFVF International bursary will provide cover up to a maximum of R280 000 (which includes cover for tuition fees and living expenses).
    All applications will undergo assessment by the internal and external panel. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited to attend an interview before final selection is made.

    National Bursary:

    • You must be a South African citizen
    • You must have completed Matric
    • You must be registered or provisionally registered to study full-time towards a qualification in a Film or TV discipline (undergraduate or postgraduate Diploma or Degree)
    • You must NOT be registered to study towards a performance arts and acting course
    • You must be registered or provisionally registered to study at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
    • You must have a strong academic record
    • You must have achieved a minimum overall average of 50% in their previous year of study, if currently studying
    • You must be in need of financial assistance, with a combined household income of less than R600 000 per year (if applicant is a minor)
    • Preference will be given to previously disadvantaged individuals and students registered at a South African public tertiary institution

    International Bursary:

    • You must be a South African citizen OR South African permanent resident
    • You must be registered to study full-time towards a postgraduate qualification in a Film or TV discipline
    • You must be registered to study towards a course that is NOT available in South Africa
    • You must NOT be registered to study towards a Live Performance or Acting course
    • You must be registered to study at an accredited tertiary institution outside of South Africa
    • You must apply at least 6 months before the start of the course (starting in January 2022)
    • You must have a strong academic record
    • You must be in need of financial assistance
