The scope of practice of a pharmacy student is defined in Chapter IV of the Regulations relating to the practice of pharmacy as follows:

According to Section 14 of the Pharmacy Act, 53 of 1974, students registered for the Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) programme and for the pharmacy technician programme (i.e. Higher Certificate: Pharmacy Support and Advanced Certificate: Pharmacy Technical Support) offered by an institution of higher learning within South Africa are required to register with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) in addition to their registration with the institution of higher learning. Registration of students with the SAPC allows them to practise the scope of practice of a pharmacy student as determined by Council for the purpose of practical training of students.
Regulation 7

Scope of practice of a pharmacy student. —

A pharmacy student may provide or perform all of the services or acts pertaining to the scope of practice of a pharmacist’s assistant registered in the category pharmacist’s assistant (basic) under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist in a pharmacy; or
A pharmacy student who has successfully completed his or her second year of study may provide or perform all of the services or acts pertaining to the scope of practice of a pharmacist’s assistant registered in the category pharmacist’s assistant (post-basic) under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist in a pharmacy.

Regulation 8

A pharmacy student may, for purposes of education and training, and under the auspices of a provider approved to offer education and training for a qualification in pharmacy and with whom such student is enrolled, provide or perform all of the services or acts pertaining to the scope of practice of a pharmacist under the direct personal supervision of a pharmacist; and
The services or acts referred to in sub-regulation 8 (1) must be provided or performed in accordance with a programme developed by the provider and approved by the council.

Knowing how to perform a SIM switch on South Africa’s top mobile networks, including Vodacom, Cell C, MTN, and Telkom, is frequently required.

This typically occurs when you want to preserve your current phone number but have lost or damaged your SIM card. You may occasionally need to insert a new SIM card because your new phone uses a different size.

Fortunately, there are simple instructions for performing a SIM change on all the main networks. Below, we provide a summary of each network’s steps.

Vodacom SIM swap

If you’re on a Vodacom prepaid plan, follow the steps below:

Buy a new prepaid SIM card and register it for RICA.
Insert it into your phone and dial 136.
Select the option to use your old cellphone number.
This will connect you to a call centre consultant who will do the SIM swap for you.
It will take between two and 24 hours before the new SIM card is activated.

If you’re on a contract plan, you will need to visit your nearest Vodacom store where you will receive assistance to make the switch. Remember to bring along your South African ID or passport and proof of residence (for RICA). According to Vodacom, there may be an activation fee.

Cell C

To do a SIM swap on Cell C, start by buying a new starter pack but do not RICA it immediately.

You can then make the switch in three ways as follows:

Self-Service IVR: Dial 084135 from a landline or any other cellphone (You need to have an active Self-Service PIN). Chose option 1 for “Manage” followed by “SIM Swop.”
In-store: Visit any Cell C store and request a SIM Swop.
USSD code: Dial 084135 or 135 and choose option 9 to speak to an agent. Wait at least two hours before inserting your SIM card into your cellphone.

MTN

There are various ways of doing an MTN SIM swap, depending on whether your SIM card is lost/damaged (and you can no longer use it) or if it is still working and you need a different card size.

If you can no longer use your old card

Follow the steps below (for PayAsYouGo subscribers):

Buy an MTN PayAsYouGo starter pack and RICA the new SIM card.
Insert it into your cellphone. If a menu appears, choose “Get a new number.”
Activate the new SIM card on the MTN network by dialing *135#
Once the RICA and activation processes are complete, dial *135*3# on the new SIM to start the SIM swap process. Alternatively, you may dial *135# and choose option 3.
Next, you will be prompted to enter your old cellphone number and the reason for doing the SIM swap.
You will then receive an SMS outlining the next steps. You will have to answer a set of security questions related to your old number.
When this validation process is complete, you will receive an SMS informing you if the SIM swap was successful.

If you’re an MTN contract subscriber, you will need to contact your service provider for further assistance.

If you can still use your old SIM card

If you can still receive SMS messages on your old card, follow the steps below (for PayAsYouGo subscribers):

Buy an MTN PayAsYouGo starter pack, insert it in your cellphone and RICA it. If prompted, choose “Get a new number.”
Activate the new SIM card by dialing *135#
Next, SMS “Swap” from your current (old) SIM to 44770.
You will receive a One-Time Pin, which is valid for 15 minutes. Save or write it down.
Using your new SIM card, SMS the word “Swap” and your “Old Number*OTP#” to 44770. For example, if your number is 0831234567 and the PIN you received is 1234, then your SMS should look like this: Swap 0831234567*1234#
Once your old SIM stops working, insert your new SIM card into your cellphone.

If you’re an MTN contract subscriber and your service provider is MTN SP, follow the steps below:

Obtain your new Contract SIM card from MTN SP.
SMS “Swap” from your current (old) SIM to 44770. Save or write down the One-Time PIN you receive. It is valid for 15 minutes.
Next, using your old SIM card, SMS “Swap” and your “New SIM Number*OTP#” to 44770. The new SIM number can be located on your new SIM card pack. For example, if your new SIM number is 2047994704 and the PIN you received is 1234, then your SMS should look like this: Swap 2047994704*1234#
Once your old SIM stops working, insert your new SIM card into your cellphone.

Telkom

A Telkom SIM swap can be done at a Telkom store. Be sure to bring along your ID and proof of residence. According to the mobile provider, you cannot do it at home – you have to visit one of their stores.

South Africa’s annual inflation rate nudged up to 4,6% in February from January’s 4,5%, inching past the 4,5% midpoint of the South African Reserve Bank’s monetary policy target range. The last time the inflation rate was above the midpoint was in November 2018 when the rate was 5,2%.

The monthly shift in consumer prices – the change from January 2020 to February 2020 – was 1,0%. This is the highest monthly increase since February 2017 when the rate was 1,1%. A rise in food and non-alcoholic beverage prices and medical insurance fees were notable contributors to the 1,0% increase.

The annual rise in food and non-alcoholic beverages was 4,2%, higher than the 3,7% recorded in January. Annual bread and cereals inflation slowed from 6,0% in January to 4,8% in February. Annual meat inflation increased from 2,4% to 4,1%.

In February, Stats SA surveyed the prices of medical insurance, as well as the fees charged by private-sector medical practitioners and hospitals. Medical aid fees increased by 9,0% over the last year. This is higher than that recorded in 2019 (8,3%) and 2018 (8,0%), but lower than the figure recorded in 2017 (9,8%).

Doctors’ fees are 5,1% more expensive than they were a year ago. Dentists’ fees have increased by 4,8% and hospital fees by 3,9%.

Prices for medicines are surveyed every month. Medical products recorded an annual increase of 6,4%. Pain killers are 10,2% more expensive than they were a year ago and vitamin prices have increased by 9,1%.

While you will not be charged for listing your items on Takealot, you must bear in mind that there are a few charges that would be incurred to your account. You will have to pay a monthly subscription fee which is R300 based on each account that you hold with them.

There is also what is known as Success fees which cover the referral fees, transactional costs, and everything that has to do with the platform. If any item is returned, you will be credited back, but if a sale is made, the company will calculate the fees based on a percentage of the VAT and the price that every item sold for. Moreover, there is a fee charged for receiving your items into the warehouse as well as for packaging and delivering the items that have been sold to each customer. This is called the fulfillment fee, and it is charged based on combining the weight (kg) and volumetric size (length x width x height in cm3) of the items. At last, if you store your products in any of the fulfillment centers of Takealot, you will pay a storage fee. However, this fee is based on the size of your items that are held in their storage centre, the age, and also the stock cover. If the item has a stock cover that is up to 45 days or more, you will pay between R3.00 and R150.00 depending on the size (which is the length, width, or height) of the item.
