South Africa Lotto History

The first South Africa Lotto tickets went on sale on Thursday, March 2, 2000, when the then President, Thabo Mbeki, bought the first ever Lotto ticket in Langa, Cape Town. Since then, the Lotto has become South Africa’s most popular lottery game, generating thousands of millionaires overnight.

The first Lotto results were published following the inaugural draw on Saturday, March 11, 2000 and it didn’t take long for the jackpot winners to start rolling in. The very first Lotto jackpot winner came forward just one day after that first draw. Along with six others, Sharon Valentine, a 47-year-old single mother and nursery school teacher, won a share of the R 3,000,000 jackpot.

However, it wasn’t long before Lotto made its first millionaire winner. Just five draws into Lotto’s lifetime, Batsirai Mupfawi won the life-changing sum of R 13,831,850 on Saturday, April 8, 2000. Mupfawi, a chauffeur who was also studying to pass exams, had spent just R 5 on tickets and won his millions after the previous three draws had rolled over.

The biggest Lotto jackpot winner in South African history was won in March 2006, and the jackpot amount was R 34,256,346. However, the lucky winner from West Rand, Johannesburg almost missed out on his winnings. Not realizing that he’d won, the 50-year-old man went to work as normal the day after the draw, and it wasn’t for almost 24 hours after the draw that he realised he’d won. Mystery still surrounds the true identity of the winner, who has chosen to keep his identity a secret to this very day.

The Daily Lotto draws take place every night at 21:00, every single day except Christmas Day. All you have to do to be in with a chance to win is buy your tickets by 20:30 on the day of the draw. You can check the previous night’s winning numbers and prize breakdown right here.

Playing the Daily Lotto couldn’t be any easier. Simply select 5 numbers between 1 and 36. You have the option of choosing your own numbers or opting for the Quick Pick random selection. Tickets cost just R3 per board to play and there are five boards per play slip, so you can play one board or five – or as many as you like!

The Daily Lotto also has a Multi-Draw option that allows you to enter your numbers into as many as 10 draws in a row. Multi-Draw can also be played online, at participating retailers or through Ithuba’s National Lottery app.

Like all lottery games, the winning numbers are drawn each night with the help of a Random Number Generator. There’s one steadfast rule for this game and that is that a jackpot must be given away every day.

The new Daily Lotto SA game isn’t related to the national Lotto, so you can take part in the Daily draws without having to play other games. The whole idea is that prize money is always won, with no chance for rollovers.

The Republic of South Africa Lotto started on March 11, 2000 (as a 6/49 game) and in August 2017, the game added more numbers to become a 6/52 lottery.
