South Africa Lotto History

The first South Africa Lotto tickets went on sale on Thursday, March 2, 2000, when the then President, Thabo Mbeki, bought the first ever Lotto ticket in Langa, Cape Town. Since then, the Lotto has become South Africa’s most popular lottery game, generating thousands of millionaires overnight.

The first Lotto results were published following the inaugural draw on Saturday, March 11, 2000 and it didn’t take long for the jackpot winners to start rolling in. The very first Lotto jackpot winner came forward just one day after that first draw. Along with six others, Sharon Valentine, a 47-year-old single mother and nursery school teacher, won a share of the R 3,000,000 jackpot.

However, it wasn’t long before Lotto made its first millionaire winner. Just five draws into Lotto’s lifetime, Batsirai Mupfawi won the life-changing sum of R 13,831,850 on Saturday, April 8, 2000. Mupfawi, a chauffeur who was also studying to pass exams, had spent just R 5 on tickets and won his millions after the previous three draws had rolled over.

How to win South Africa Lotto?

Match the numbers you select to the randomly drawn winning numbers, and you win prizes with the South African Daily Lotto. Unlike other games in South Africa, all the prize money has got to be won in each and every draw. That means there’s a big chance you could land your share of the jackpot without the need to match all the numbers.

With the Daily Lotto game, you can win prize money by matching two, three, four or all five of the numbers drawn. This lottery doesn’t have fixed prizes. Rather, the value of the cash award depends on how many tickets are sold for a draw and how many winners there are.

From every R3 spent on a ticket, 50% of that revenue is ploughed into the prize pool. A portion of the pot is then allocated to the four different prize divisions, with the cash split between winners in each division.

All Daily Lotto prizes are pari-mutuel, so there are no fixed payouts. Occasionally, a guaranteed jackpot may be applied, but this will always be announced via official channels.

South Africa Lotto Lotto Plus 1 & Lotto Plus 2 payouts

Lotto Plus 1 offers players who enter the main Lotto draw a second chance of winning a prize. So if you entered the Lotto game but didn’t win, Lotto Plus 1 introduces a second set of numbers that are revealed shortly after the main Lotto draw. However, after the rule changes that took place on May 22, 2016, the Lotto Plus 1 jackpot will now keep rolling over until someone wins the big prize.

The rule changes in May 2016 also mean that players can now use a Quick Pick option to play Lotto Plus 1. This is a faster way of filling out a play slip with random numbers, instead of picking them manually.

The cost of entering Lotto Plus 1 is just R 2.50, which does mean that the prize pool tends to be smaller than the main Lotto draw, but it’s not unusual for the jackpot to hit R 2,000,000+. The odds of winning Lotto Plus 1, and the share of the prize pool that is put aside for each combination of numbers matched, are as follows:

Since July 30, 2017, players can now choose to take part in the new Lotto Plus 2 game. This means Lotto Plus 2 participants now have a third chance of hitting the jackpot. Choosing to play Lotto Plus 2 will cost you an extra R 2.50, which will bring the total cost of your ticket for one line – with all three games played – to R 10. The Lotto Plus 2 draw will take place after the Lotto Plus 1 draw. The game format is the same: seven balls are drawn from a pool of balls ranging from 1 to 52.

Despite having a smaller prize pool than the original Lotto game (on average just over R 4,000,000 per draw compared to Lotto’s R 15,000,000), the Lotto Plus 1 draw creates an extra 13,000 winners every draw. So, for just R 2.50 extra, you’re increasing your chances of winning something, and now with the new Lotto Plus 2, those chances grow even higher.Playing the Lotto game, the Lotto Plus 1 or Lotto Plus 2 each player has a 1 in 38 chance of winning a prize.

Like Lotto, 45% of all Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 ticket sales go towards prizes, while the rest goes to a variety of national charities and good causes.

Save Money by Knowing South Africa Lotto Numbers

Lotto players who select their lottery numbers thoughtlessly or foolishly are destined to lose even before the drawing takes place. By knowing which number combinations and patterns to avoid, you’ll have an advantage over such players—and save money, too.
