Bongile Mantsai is a 40-year-old South African actor, musician and dancer. He was born on 3 February 1982 in Stellenbosch, Western Cape Province in South Africa. Growing up in a small township of Kayamandi, Mantsai’s father was a pastor, giving him a musical background which is influenced by the church. Church introduced him to art as he used to compose music for the choir. ¹

He matriculated from Kayamandi High School. After that he enrolled at Stellenbosch University to Study drama. Mantsai couldn’t immediately get a placement at Stellenbosch University because he didn’t know Afrikaans but because of eagerness he eventually realized his dream. ²

Career of Bongile Mantsai

Bongile appeared on films, theatre productions and television productions for over 15 years. He played the starring role of Poncho on Mzansi Magic drama series Nkululeko. He became a prominent actor after appearing on Scandal as Mthunzi Mayisa. In 2017 he played Vija on Inxeba: The Wound, a film about Xolani, a lonely factory worker, travels to the rural mountains with the men of his community to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. In 2018 he played a fearless Rabble Rouser on Sew the Winter to My Skin. And in 2019 he starred on South African crime sports film, Knuckle City as Dudu Nyakama alongside Patrick Ndlovu.

  • In 2014 he bagged an award at Naledi Theatre Awards for the Best Lead Male Actor.
  • In 2019 he collected the Best Actor at Durban International Film Festival.
  • He is the 2020 Winner of the Golden Horny awards for TV soap “Scandal” and Best Actor in Feature film Knuckle City SAFTA awards.
  • In 2021 he was nominated for Golden Hony Awards for TV soap at SAFTA awards
