The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is the central bank of South Africa. The Bank is responsible for protecting the value of the currency, to ensure the South African economy remains balanced, sustainable and promotes growth. The Bank also issues and destroying currency (including coins and banknotes); manages the countries official gold and foreign reserves; manages the national payments system; regulates and supervises financial institutions; acting as banker to government; acting as lender in exceptional cases to provide liquidity assistance and administering the country’s remaining exchange rate control systems.

ABOUT THE SARB SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED & SELECTION

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) has a wide range of art pieces, from many different media and time eras. In a mission to support and grow a new generation of artists in South Africa, the SARB formed the Art Scholarship, to be awarded to Fine Art students every year.

The SARB is inviting Fine Arts students to apply for the SARB Art Scholarship, valued at R50 000. Students who are pursuing a 1 year Advanced Diploma in Fine Art/ Final year of study towards a 4 year Undergraduate Degree in Fine Art or Honours Degree in Fine Art may apply for funding.

Scholarship recipients will be required to partake in a mentorship programme and will be required to donate 1 piece of artwork from the graduate show to the SARB.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited to attend an interview. If you do not receive any feedback, please accept that your application was not successful.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SARB SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):

  • Must be South African citizen
  • Must be registered to study towards one of these qualifications for the 2021 academic year:
    • 4 year Undergraduate Degree in Fine Art – must be in your final year of study
    • 1 year Advanced Diploma in Fine Art – must have completed a 3 year Undergraduate Diploma in Fine Art
    • Honours Degree in Fine Art – must have completed a Fine Art 3 year Undergraduate Degree in Fine Art

 

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE SARB SCHOLARSHIP

Download and complete the SARB Art Scholarship Application Form (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Academic transcripts for the 2020 academic year
  • 6 to 8 images of artworks you produced in 2020
  • An artist statement (must include: a short introduction about yourself, your artwork, why you require financial support and why you deserve to be awarded the bursary) (maximum 300 words)
