The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is a multidisciplinary, independent research institute based across two sites in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Our goal is to become a source of fundamental discoveries into the susceptibility, transmission and cure of HIV, TB and related diseases. We also seek ways to improve diagnosis, prevention and treatment. To achieve this, we bring together leading researchers from different fields, use cutting edge science to improve people’s health, and help to train the next generation of African scientists. Our research is truly collaborative: we work with over 60 academic and clinical institutions in South Africa, and elsewhere in Africa and the world.

AHRI has an exciting position available for a Biorepository Intern. The Biorepository Intern will work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team in AHRI focusing on TB and HIV research. The candidate will report to the Laboratory Supervisor and be based at the AHRI Somkhele site. The incumbent, will be required to perform various laboratory based duties and functions, such as receiving and processing of biological samples, preparing samples for storage and transport, assembly of specimen collection kits and assist with general housekeeping and maintenance of the laboratory, equipment in accordance with health and safety and company policies and procedures and r ISO15189 and or GCLP requirements. The position is based in Somkhele but may be required to work in Durban periodically.

Minimum Qualifications: 1. A National Diploma or BSc in Medical Microbiology, Virology or another related and relevant field. Minimum Experience: 1. Minimum of 6 months experience in a biorepository, diagnostic or research laboratory setting; 2. Experience working with a Laboratory Information Management System and 3. Experience in processing, aliquoting and storage of various biological samples.

Skills and Knowledge Required: 1. Knowledge of operating in a SANAS accredited laboratory (ISO 15189 or similar) and or Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) compliant laboratory and 2. Registered with HPCSA. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 1. Be unemployed; 2. Must have completed N6 theory in Office Administration from a public TVET; 3. Must have written confirmation from the TVET College that they are eligible for the 18 months workplace experience to graduate and 4. Must have a strong academic record.
