Former Crime Intelligence boss Rchard Mdluli has been sentenced to an effective five years behind bars after being convicted of the kidnapping, assault and intimidation for crimes committed in 1998.

Mdluli and accomplice Mthembeni Mthunzi – who also received a five year sentence on Tuesday 29 September – had tracked down Alice Manana and Oupa Ramogibe and beaten them senseless because Mdluli learnt that the latter had engaged in an extramarital affair and secretly eloped with his wife, Tshidi Buthelezi.

MDLULI RECEIVES FIVE YEAR SENTENCE

Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng handed Mduli a three year sentence for kidnapping, two years for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and a one year sentence for assault which will run concurrently, effectively damning the disgraced intelligence head to five years imprisonment.

“We are dealing with two senior policemen who abrogated to themselves powers which police have. These powers were abused to such an extent that the only appropriate sentence in the circumstances is a custodial sentence,” Mokgoatlheng said.

“This is one of those cases where retribution must carry the proper weight,” he said.

Lawyers for Mdluli and Mthunzi have indicated to the court that they will appeal the sentencing.

TOO OLD FOR JAIL

Mdluli begged for mercy again on Monday when he appealed to the court to hand him a community service orientated sentence. He said that his advantaged age and chronic underlying illnesses meant that he is not suited to a stint behind bars. He said this made him susceptible to contracting COVID-19.

In March, Mdluli cited the effect his imprisonment would have on his children as a reason for him to be spared the slamming of a cell door.

“I am not making myself a saint. I have never lifted a hand to any woman. My wife and children can attest to that,” Mdluli said.

“I know you have found me guilty and I have indicated what I am doing for my children and extended family.
