General Details
Enrolled Nurse Auxilliary(R2176) and Enrolled Nurse (R2175)
The Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary Course (R2176) and Enrolled Nurse Course (R2175) which is offered by New Hope School of Nursing are education and training programs for people wanting to work in the health sector in the economy of South Africa.

The overall aim of the courses are to provide individuals with the required practical skills and knowledge with which to conduct themselves professionally in the Health Environment.

The key objective of the R2176 and R2175 course are to ensure that the participants are evaluated in order to determine their suitability to work in the health sector. This provides the school with a reference according to which they are able to evaluate the skills and experience of anyone they intend to accept as a student.

The South African Nursing Council certificate which is issued at the end of the training program provides recognition for the skills, knowledge and attitudes of individuals who perform an invaluable service to the community.

New Hope School of Nursing students also receives recognition for successfully completing the program from the South African Nursing Council as the students have satisfied the requirements for the course according to R2176 and R2175 of 1998 of The South African Nursing Council and thus our students are certified and registered with the South African Nursing Council and New Hope School of Nursing simultaneously at completion of the course.
Course Outline for R2176
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
The primary purpose of the course is to provide the learner with the knowledge and clinical skills acquired to function as a safe practitioner, and as a member of the nursing team in a health care setting. The learner will be competent to deliver basic nursing care to patients / clients in accordance with legislation, ethics and codes of practice pertaining to the nursing profession in South Africa.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMMES AND MODULES:
ENROLLED NURSE AUXILIARY PROGRAMME IS BASIC NURSING, GENERATING 128 CREDITS FOR THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS AND PROGRAMMES:
Programme: Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary (ENA)

Qualification: Certificate: Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary

NQF Level: 4

Field : NSB 09: Health Science and Social Sciences

Sub Fields: Health, Education and Training of Health Professionals, Child Health and Development, Communication, Adult Health, Community Health, Maternal and Reproductive Health, Mental Health.

APPLIED COMPETENCE:
THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP THE FOLLOWING PRACTICAL, FOUNDATIONAL AND REFLECTIVE COMPETENCIES
Research, professional, technological, leadership, and consultation skills Knowledge of an insight in the aspects of basic nursing care with focus on reasoning, problem-solving, interpretation, comparison, evaluation of basic nursing care Competencies and skills in innovation and the application of knowledge in new contexts as well as decision – making , strategic , thinking , self-directedness, organization and teamwork.

The modules add significant value to the learners competence in terms of the following: Further development of life skills, leadership and consultation skills Further development of problem-solving and critical-analytical reasoning

On completion of the modules the learner will contribute to society in terms of the following: Improvement of the quality of nursing / health care by implementing leadership, basic nursing skills Promotion of professional ethical values in nursing / health practises Promotion of South African health care services and the reconstruction and development programmes Improvement of the quality of nursing / health care by implementing effective communication and supportive interviewing skills.

DURATION OF THE COURSE:
The duration of the Courses are respective two academic years which shall be completed within a period of 18 and 36 month from the date of commencement unless the South African Nursing Council determines otherwise.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES (R2176):
On completion of the Course the learner will be able to: Maintain good inter- professional relationships with all other members of the nursing team and the multi-disciplinary health care team in the health care unit.

Practising within the norms , values and legal framework of the South African nursing profession as well as recognising and respecting the dignity and worth of man.

Apply a range of basic nursing skills and competencies to meet the basic human needs of individual patient / clients or groups as part of the nursing regimen planned by a registered nurse or midwife in a variety of clinical settings.

Provide relevant and appropriate health information to patients / clients as part of the nursing regimen planned by the registered nurse or midwife.

The Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary will at all times carry out his or her functions under the direct or indirect supervision of a registered nurse or midwife , as stated in the Scope of Practice of the Nursing Auxiliary (R2598 as amended).

Learners who have successfully completed the course may enter the second year of the course leading to enrolment as a Nurse.

COMPONENTS OF THE COURSE:
1.NURSING HISTORY AND ETHICS
The purpose of nursing history and ethics is to enable the learner firstly to clarify the learner’s own values in relation to the values of others and the resolution of ethical issues.

Secondly, the learner will be able to internalise the norms and values of nursing as well as the function and purpose of professional regulations.

Knowledge of the history of nursing will enable the learner to understand the present situation within the South African nursing profession.

2.BASIC NURSING CARE
The purpose of basic nursing care is to equip the learner with knowledge, skills and competencies that will enable the learner to implement nursing acts for individuals or groups as part of the nursing regimen planned by the registered nurse or registered midwife.

Basic nursing care will also enable the learner to develop insight and understanding with regard to the development stages of people, the illness,/ health continuum, factors causing disease, as well as the scientific principles and methods used to prevent disease and ensure the provision of a high standard of nursing care that is safe, accessible, equitable and affordable for individuals, families and groups in South Africa.

3.ELEMENTARY NUTRITION
The purpose of elementary nutrition is to enable the learner to acquire nutritional knowledge and to appreciate the role played by nutrition and illness, with a view to enabling the learner to apply this knowledge in promoting the optimum health of individuals or groups.

4.FIRST AID
The purpose of First Aid is to provide the learner with the knowledge and skills to manage injuries and medical emergencies in accordance with accepted principles.

5.ELEMENTARY ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
The purpose of the study of elementary anatomy and physiology is to enable the learner to gain an elementary knowledge of the body and it’s functions with a view to enabling the learner to understand the health problems of patients/ clients as well as their management.

6.INTRODUCTION TO COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE
The purpose of this component is to equip the learner with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values with regard to the principles of primary, secondary and tertiary health care and their application to address the health needs of individuals, families, and groups within South African Society.

7.PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LIFE SKILLS
The purpose of this component is to empower the learner and to enable the learner to adapt successfully to their chosen career
The learner will be encouraged to live positively and to deal with problems and life tasks in a balanced and pro-active manner
Recognise and demonstrate respect for the dignity and worth of people.
Appreciate how social and cultural influences as well as physical circumstances have a bearing on human behaviour and health.
Demonstrate an understanding of the Nursing Act (including the regulations regarding the Scope of Practice and the conduct of the Enrolled Nurse Auxiliary), as well as other Statutory legislation and aspects of common law applicable to nursing
Abide by the ethical and moral codes governing nursing and have the insight to practice safely, take ethical decisions within the bounds of applicable legislation and her/ his scope of practice.
Accept that nursing is involved with man before birth.
Understand the principles of comprehensive health care and recognise the place of the enrolled nursing auxiliary in the team providing such care.
Demonstrate willingness to co-operate with team members.
Recognises and comes out his responsibility in respect of the promotion of the physical and mental health of man and the prevention of physical and mental disorders in man.
Institute first aid Measures.
Recognise and carry out his/her role and responsibility in respect of teaching co – workers and patients.
