South Africa Lotto History

The first South Africa Lotto tickets went on sale on Thursday, March 2, 2000, when the then President, Thabo Mbeki, bought the first ever Lotto ticket in Langa, Cape Town. Since then, the Lotto has become South Africaā€™s most popular lottery game, generating thousands of millionaires overnight.

The first Lotto results were published following the inaugural draw on Saturday, March 11, 2000 and it didnā€™t take long for the jackpot winners to start rolling in. The very first Lotto jackpot winner came forward just one day after that first draw. Along with six others, Sharon Valentine, a 47-year-old single mother and nursery school teacher, won a share of the R 3,000,000 jackpot.

However, it wasnā€™t long before Lotto made its first millionaire winner. Just five draws into Lottoā€™s lifetime, Batsirai Mupfawi won the life-changing sum of R 13,831,850 on Saturday, April 8, 2000. Mupfawi, a chauffeur who was also studying to pass exams, had spent just R 5 on tickets and won his millions after the previous three draws had rolled over.

The biggest Lotto jackpot winner in South African history was won in March 2006, and the jackpot amount was R 34,256,346. However, the lucky winner from West Rand, Johannesburg almost missed out on his winnings. Not realizing that heā€™d won, the 50-year-old man went to work as normal the day after the draw, and it wasnā€™t for almost 24 hours after the draw that he realised heā€™d won. Mystery still surrounds the true identity of the winner, who has chosen to keep his identity a secret to this very day.

The Daily Lotto draws take place every night at 21:00, every single day except Christmas Day. All you have to do to be in with a chance to win is buy your tickets by 20:30 on the day of the draw. You can check the previous nightā€™s winning numbers and prize breakdown right here.

Playing the Daily Lotto couldnā€™t be any easier. Simply select 5 numbers between 1 and 36. You have the option of choosing your own numbers or opting for the Quick Pick random selection. Tickets cost just R3 per board to play and there are five boards per play slip, so you can play one board or five ā€“ or as many as you like!

The Daily Lotto also has a Multi-Draw option that allows you to enter your numbers into as many as 10 draws in a row. Multi-Draw can also be played online, at participating retailers or through Ithubaā€™s National Lottery app.

Like all lottery games, the winning numbers are drawn each night with the help of a Random Number Generator. Thereā€™s one steadfast rule for this game and that is that a jackpot must be given away every day.

The new Daily Lotto SA game isnā€™t related to the national Lotto, so you can take part in the Daily draws without having to play other games. The whole idea is that prize money is always won, with no chance for rollovers.

The Republic of South Africa Lotto started on March 11, 2000 (as a 6/49 game) and in August 2017, the game added more numbers to become a 6/52 lottery.

  • HOW TO PLAY THE GAME: ToĀ playĀ South African Lotto, chooseĀ sixĀ numbers fromĀ 1 to 52.
  • COST: Each lotto game board costsĀ R5.00. For additional costs, a player can also playĀ South Africa Lotto Plus #1 and #2, extensions of the South Africa Lotto game.
  • DRAWINGS: The drawings are held twice a week onĀ Wednesday and Saturday.
  • TO WIN THE GAME: from zainfo.co.za, The South Africa Lotto draws the 6 winning numbers plus a bonus number which provides more ways to win if a lotto player misses 1, 2, or 3 of the main numbers and gets the bonus number.
  • ODDS: The odds of winning the first prize RSA Lotto jackpot areĀ one in 20,358,520.
  • JACKPOT PRIZE: The jackpot isĀ $10,000,000.

What can I expect to win South Africa Lotto?

Match the numbers you select to the randomly drawn winning numbers, and you win prizes with the South African Daily Lotto. Unlike other games in South Africa, all the prize money has got to be won in each and every draw. That means thereā€™s a big chance you could land your share of the jackpot without the need to match all the numbers.

With the Daily Lotto game, you can win prize money by matching two, three, four or all five of the numbers drawn. This lottery doesnā€™t have fixed prizes. Rather, the value of the cash award depends on how many tickets are sold for a draw and how many winners there are.

From every R3 spent on a ticket, 50% of that revenue is ploughed into the prize pool. A portion of the pot is then allocated to the four different prize divisions, with the cash split between winners in each division.

All Daily Lotto prizes are pari-mutuel, so there are no fixed payouts. Occasionally, a guaranteed jackpot may be applied, but this will always be announced via official channels.

Lottery numbers are randomly drawn. But randomly drawn numbers form patterns that can be tracked and used to our advantage. Having carefully analyzed all the drawings in pastĀ lotto resultsĀ of more than 200 different lotto games worldwide, with histories going back as far as 1955, we have verified the following incredibly simple rule

The key to Smart Luckā€™s successful lotto number selection methods is playing the probabilities. If you play a pattern that occurs only five percent of the time, you can expect that pattern to lose 95 percent of the time, giving you no chance to win 95 percent of the time. So, donā€™t buck the probabilities.

ChancesĀ of winning South Africa Lotto

So, how much can you win with the Daily Lotto and just what are your chances of winning? Hereā€™s a look at the prize divisions when the jackpot is won:

Winning the South Africa Lotto jackpot

Matching six of the numbers drawn on Wednesday or Saturday will mean youā€™ve won the jackpot -or if there is more than one winner, from zainfo.co.za,a share of the jackpot. Normally, there are just one or two players that share the jackpot prize; however, multiple jackpot winners do happen. For example, on Saturday, March 15, 2003, there were an incredible 33 Lotto jackpot winners who each won R 119,901.

Like the rest of the payouts, the jackpot amount is dependent on ticket sales; it is made up of 18.25% of the total prize pool plus any pre-existing rollover.

How to WIN South Africa Lotto

When you select your South African Lotto numbers, try to have a relatively even mix of odd and even numbers. AllĀ odd numbersĀ or allĀ even numbersĀ are rarely drawn, occurring less than 3 percent of the time.Ā The best mix is to have 2/4, 4/2 or 3/3 odd/even, which means two odd and four even, or four odd and two even, or three odd and three even. One of these three patterns will occur in 81 percent of the drawings.
